Question about Lee Dbl Disk Kit
Good Afternoon,

I have a couple questions about the LEE Double Disk kit as I have the dispenser that came with my Turret Kit. The thing is that I do not load pistol cartridges currently, only 30-06 and .308Win. I have heard that some people are able to buy a DDK and then they are able to start charging their .30's.

I read on midway.. 'This kit can drop powder charges of up to 28.8 grains of Unique and 42.2 grains of IMR 4064'.

My problem is that my loads for these calibers are greater than 42.2gr. I was assuming that IMR 4064 is a ball powder and that usually only ball powders will measure well in the DDK. My issue is that I use Varget. Would Varget meter well through this?

My loads are (44.5g Varget .308) and (49.5g Varget 30-06). Is this achievable with the LEE DDK and Varget?

If so, I may be purchasing the .30 Charging Die and Double Disk Kit.

Thanks for any help.

I reload 308 with my dbl disk kit. You need to read the instructions that came with the powder measure carefully. It gives you a chart that tells you the VMD factor of all the popular brands of powder. You multiply the charge in grains you want by the VMD factor and that will give you the charge in cubic centimeters. Then you go to the bottom chart and it will tell you which cavities to stack to get the charge you want, with a small safety factor built in. Please pay attention to which disk they want on the top and bottom. They want the bigger disk on the bottom to prevent powder from sitting on the ledge instead of falling into the shell.

I use 2.93cc to get 45 grains of BL-C(2). That means the 1.57 cavity on the bottom, and the 1.36 cavity on the top. You will most likely have to jump up one notch on the bottom chart to actually get a full 45 grains. They seem to have a safety factor built into the VMD ratings.

Yes, the Double Disk meters Varget just fine, but the Double Disk is not infinitely adjustable. Going up or down one cavity jumps the charge 0.7 grains, not the 0.2 we would prefer for developing and fine tuning loads.

The largest Varget charge I can get with the double disk is 43.5 grains. It doesn't go any higher. This is actual charge weight, please DON'T trust the Lee chart with the VMD theory. The chart does not reliably reflect the actual weights I get for any of my regular powders. In fact, I don't believe the current chart even lists Varget. Check for yourself. http://www.leeprecision.com/cgi-data/instruct/AD2302.pdf

I put the Lee Perfect Powder Measure on my P1000 press using the Rifle Charging Die. I believe that the Universal Charge Die is used to mount the PPM on your turret but don't take my word without calling Lee to confirm. Their catalog is a little hazy on that.

I would love to find out of the Perfect powder measure does work on my turret press. Then i can load larger shells like the 30-06. Please let me know if you find out. I think I will e-mail Lee on that too.

Thanks for all of the help. I currently have just the 'LEE Saftey Scale' so right now I am weighing out every single charge. I was debating getting the RCBS Charge Master Combo, but really thought about how much I shoot.

My brother and I usually shoot about 150-300 rounds each a month. I thought that a more cost effective idea would to try to use the lee auto disk measure that was included with the kit, but it only seems to work for .223 like cartridges.

What would be a good powder measure that throws pretty decent measurements. I insist on beaming and trickling my precision rounds, but this would be more for plinking.

If I could kill two birds with one stone that would be great.

I intend on adding this to my midway order.

EDIT: I too am looking into the PPM.

I tried to call LEE but no answer. Must be gone for the day.

As for the double pull to get the correct charges, I am not sure if that would be possible apparently since LEE has adopted a weird way of increasing its charges on the disks. Somebody with the disks would have to let us know.

I DID read on midway on a review for the PPM that one of the customers bought the PPM and Universal Charging die but could not figure out how to set it up. He then called LEE and they informed him that it did not work with his turret. I have the newer turret and this was back in OCT 2006 I believe.

I load Varget with my Autodisk and disk doubler by finding a charge that is half what I need and double throwing. Very accurate. The Varget powder VMI is not listed as such but Varget powder is actually Mulwex/ADI AR2208 (it's an Australian powder rebranded for US market). My AutoDisk chart had the Aussi Defense Industries Mulwex AR2208 on it.

You could bore out the holes in the double disk. Might ruin it but might get just what you want. Just another option.

Well I wound up just buying the 'perfect powder measure' for $18 and am thinking about using that as a stand alone. I may go ahead and get a double disk kit and double pull them sometime later.
