I received a 38 Special from a family member. They indicated that it was a somewhat rare revolver. It states "38 S&W Special CTG" on the barrel. When you open the cylinder it has a serial number with a star stamped below it. It is a silver gun with a 5 inch barrel. I would like to see if any one knows more of its history. Thank you for your feedback.

It looks like a S&W. Post all the gun's info on DOB for s&w thread. Radagast is very helpful.

The number inside the crane cut in the frame is not a serial number.
It is an assembly number used by the factory to keep the fitted parts together during finishing. It is meaningless for I.D. purposes.

The actual serial number needed to I.D. it's age & model will be found on the bottom of the steel grip frame. (butt of the gun)

And a much better picture sure would help.

From what I can see, it appears to be a N-Frame Heavy Duty 38/44 or "New Century" or "Triple Lock" model.

Grips are plastic replacements, and I can't tell from the poor picture, but it may have been re-finished in nickle or chrome at some point.

Hi there:

I believe the star was stamped at the S&W factory when the gun was reworked. A factory historian's letter would be a good thing to get on this revolver.

Welcome to THR! Just so you know, the title of your post is the cartridge for which your revolver is chambered. "CTG" is an abbreviation for cartridge.

That would have been my guess. 38/44 HD prewar. The picture is small though.

Does yours look like this?
