Well I finally found the pistol I've been wanting for quite some time. I bought a Sig P239 a couple weeks ago, and I'm loving it. I'ts a little rough, it has a pretty good gouge on the left side of the slide. That's a cosmetic thing only, and for the $350 I paid for it, I think I came out pretty good. My question is, can someone tell me an approximate age by the serial number? SA4-54716.
I picked up a Galco Concealable holster, and it carries and conceals very well. Thanks.

Nice looking gun!

I'm not positive about the newer guns, but the German guns have a date code next to their proof marks on the bottom of the slide. Turn the pistol upside down (sights to the floor, like you're looking in the magwell) and look on the barrel end of the slide just beyond the dust cover (which should now be facing up). You should see several proof marks including a 2 letter alpha-numeric date code.

A-0
B-1
C-2
D-3
E-4
F-5
G-6
H-7
J-8
K-9

Not sure why, but there's no "I".

The date codes only work with the all German guns. The P239 has always been made in Exeter so it won't have them. You may be able to get some info on the Sig forum and Sig will sell you a date of manufacture certificate. Yours is definitely pre-2007 when Sigarms became Sig Sauer in the US.

Did it come in a Sig box? My CPO sig came in a box with a sticker on the side that had a munufacture date

If the grips are original you can sometimes get a good estimate of the date of manufacture for the gun on the inside. Some grips have a little circle with the numbers 1 - 12, like a clock, around it and an arrow pointing to one of the numbers. That number is the month. The year is the the two digits on either side of the arrow. The date is the date of manufacture of the grips, but in a lot of cases is close to the date of manufacture for the gun.

There is a picture at this link on page 28, almost to the bottom.

I don't know if the grip panel date apply to P239s though. That link has a list of serial numbers on page 1, but I couldn't find one close to yours in the P239 list.
