I would like to purchase a .45 soon and have been looking at the XD's, particularly the 4" barrel. I noticed on all the models that the guide rod at the front of the gun sticks out? Why is that? Not only do I think it looks bad (I know looks don't matter with SD), but I could possibly see where it COULD get hung on clothing. Any ideas as to why they're built like this?

I found the following on the net... haven't verified it so take it for what it's worth. The following is not the only place I have read this info, but this is where I quoted from:

http://msfirearms.com/wiki/firearms/handguns/Springfield/154.html

"The dual return spring arrangement is of the captive type; when assembled, the front of a spring guide rod projects slightly forward from the front of the slide; Springfield advertising literature calls this a "muzzle protector", but the original text of patent WO02059539, published in August 01, 2002 and granted to the Croatian design team, describes the reason for this feature as to "enable firing the bullet when the pistol is pushed towards someone's back". This is "necessary" because HS2000, as almost any other modern pistol, has a disconnector safety that does not permit the release of the striker if the slide is not fully closed and locked to the barrel, and such situation can be easily encountered in circumstances described in the quote."

What philbo said -- I believe the XD guide rod is specifically set up to prevent the pistol from going out of battery in the event of contact shooting someone. No idea how well it works, but not a bad feature in theory in a defensive pistol.

i have 2 xds and experience with many more and at no time have i ever had an issues with that.

my xd service does sport a dgr and wolff spring but they weren't replaced with the factory for the reasons you described. btw the dgr dosn't stick out when the slide is closed.

Non-issue. If it's an aesthetic problem, there's a guy that makes conventional one piece guide rods for the XD Service and Tactical models.

The 5" Tactical model has a solid (actually it's hollowed) guide rod. I chose to purchase an aftermarket solid stainless steel rod for mine. I think the factory 4" service model rod cannot be changed, due to its design.
