Question about the Powder Scoop in the Lee Loader (for .38)

All good info but I didn't see the proper way to use the Lee dippers mentioned. I have the full set and use them regularly for light cast bullet loads. They are very consistent if you use them right They are dippers, not scoops. So put some powder in something deep like a small margarine tub or something similar. I've never had a static issue using one. Push the dipper down into the powder bottom first so it's submerged and let the powder flow into it by it's own weight. Lift it out and strike the powder off even with a business card for consistency. Thats it. If you scoop with it like you do with flour your pushing the powder in with pressure and it will never be consistent. One other thing you'll notice. The mouth is tapered on the outside. Thats so even if it's used as a scoop most of the excess will fall off instead of heaping on top making the charge much heavier. I really like them. Sitting on the porch or picnic table loading with a Lee Hand Press and dippers is easy, simple and fun compared to standing at the bench in the basement. I have 6 months of winter to do that. Good luck.

After you buy your scale, build one of the “fancy” dippers like what is shown above with a spent casing and a little solder. Go ahead and pop the old primer, drill the primer pocket and thread it to take a 1/4-20 setscrew. You now have an adjustable powder dipper. The key thing for using a dipper is repeating the process exactly the same each times that your powder charges are consistent...but with 38spl your not likely looking at supreme precision target loads so just get a safe amount in there and your good to go.

As I said before (which somehow disappeared) everyone responding here already knows that.
For the more observant members, my post was relating a dipper to a more "sophisticate" measuring method; ie volume rather than weight. Thanks for reminding us that you said it first...

I mentioned Lee's suggested method in my first post; dip backwards and strike/level...(Hey, I got an "I said it first" post too!)

As others said, I'd suggest buying the Lee scale. Then dip and dump back in the powder bottle a few times to make sure your consistent with the dipper.
I have a nicer press but still mess with the Lee loader just for fun. I use the $50 lee hand press to deprime and size then prime 50 or 100 at a time then take that box of primed with the Lee loader and just have to bell, drop the powder, bullet and crimp.
