I am not a licensed dealer, just a private citizen and would like to sell my handgun to a friend.

Do I need to go through a process or can I just sell him the pistol without paperwork or a third party?

I am located in Virginia and he is a resident too.

No paperwork needed. Unless there's a local city law of some sort, there is no state restriction. Just make sure the person is old enough, a resident, not a felon, etc.

VA requires no background check, etc. They DO require that the pistol or rifle be sold only to a VA resident that is not a felon. FWIW, I only sell rifles through FTF sales. Handguns ALWAYS go on consignment at a local gunstore. This way, the paperwork trail stops with the FFL dealer and THEY get the annoying phone calls from the ATF.

For my rifle sales:
Here's what I do, make a bill of sale with both names on it with make, model and serial number of the gun in question, as well as the Driver's License number. This way, you at least have a record of what was sold to whom with a timestamp.

You said he's a resident and you're a resident, and I'm going to assume you have no reason to think he's a prohibited person, so you're fine. Sell it to him, keep a record if you like, don't keep one if you don't want to.
