I've been looking to pick up a varmint rifle to curb my chicken and cat losses and reduce the raccoon and coyote population here in my neck of the woods. I was originally planning on getting a .22mag but I came across a great deal on a heavy barrel, single shot, rossi .223 with a simmons 4-12x40 scope. I read several positive and negative reviews on this gun and I decided to pick it up.

I took it out today with 40rds of pmc bronze 55gr fmj. After a little adjusting I was grouping between 1" and 1.5" at 100yds with 3 shot groups. I have read a lot of complaints about the triggers but this rifle is pretty light (very light actually) and breaks clean. The guy I bought it from didn't know if anything had been done to it (he bought it used from someone who had bought it used) The other complaint I had read alot about was ftf. I had 2 ftfs in 40 rounds. The primer had a nice dimple in it. I don't know if it is an issue with the rifle but I'm suspecting the $5 ammo. I'm gonna pick up some decent ballistic tip ammo next weekend and try again. I can't wait to call in and drop some coyotes and avenge my murdered cats.

Is there anyone else with experience with these particular rifles? Is the nice trigger a bonus or do they all have good triggers? Does anyone know what the barrel twist is? I've read 1 in 12 but some prople say the heavy barrels are 1 in 9.

Might be a hard military primer cause FTFs. I have a handi rifle in .223 that doesn't like surplus 5.56. I'm not sure whether PMC is surplus or uses hard primers. FWIW, your not the first to report this issue, and I believe Wolf makes a stronger hammer spring for that gun.

The boxes were a little beat up. They were in the clearance section of my lgs. There were only two boxes and I bought them both. :neener: I believe the pmc ammo is boxer primed. I will definitely be looking into the availability of an upgraded hammer spring. I want to try a few different ammos befor I actually buy a hammer spring. I would hate to have a varmint in my crosshairs only to have a ftf.
