Question for Owners of a Walker Colt

I have been looking into what I am going to save my lunch money for. I am looking at a Walker for one thing. I have seen may Walkers on line and in catalogs. I have never seen on in person. For some reason, when I go to the range (I seldom go to ranges, I mostly shoot in the hills), I have not seen a Walker.

My question is about the Walker's lock up. I have seen photos of Walkers and the locking holes in the cylinder seem to be just that, holes. Do these round holes made for the bolt to lock into as good a lock up as slots? Also what advancements do the Dragoons have over the Walkers?

I do have a preference for Remingtons but a Colt might be a nice change. I am also looking into a Navy Colt. Any comments on either weapon would be welcome, T.

Colts

The Walker is the ole grand-daddy. Good lock up and is in a class of its own. Mine is a Colt Signature Series and a great shooter.

I have 2 Colt Second Generation Navies that are also in a class of their own. I am partial to the Colts.

My favorites are the Colt Second Generation Pocket Navy and Pocket Police. I really like the size. Easy to carry and fun to shoot. I have both and have been shooting them regular for well over 25 years now.

You won't go wrong with any of them.

rommer, I've never had any trouble with mine not locking. Since the bolt is the same size (actually just a hair bit smaller) as the hole, it should lock up fine.

Rommer you have to look at our Walker club. There are bunch of us that can help you. i can tell you without a doubt the walker is a really fun gun to shoot. Only gun ever made that can be loaded up to 60 grains of black powder. the recoil is not that bad either. But then the gun is heavy at 4 1/2lbs and almost 16 inches long. its a head turner. same time you will know if one is being fired. it gives off a huge puff of smoke and gives a very distinctive BOOM sound. shooting next to smokeless powder you can tell the difference. now the walker just like all the other colts. do lock up into battery. they are made the same way. advantages of a dragoon. it weighs a lot less. then on the back plate there is the recess for spent caps to fall out. this and the loading lever is much improved on the dragoon. without a doubt though they are both head turners and very strong guns.

The Walker is a curious revolver. It was the improvement of the Colt Paterson revolver and lasted only a short time before it too was "improved" into the Dragoon revolver.

It is heavy, 4 1/2 pounds empty is the oft quoted weight. And that weight makes it fun to shoot with full loads but almost impossible to use for target purposes.

The cylinder on mine locks up with no problem and the same lockup was continued in the first Dragoon revolvers. The rectangular notches of the middle dragoons and later revolvers also work well.

More reproduction Walkers have been made and sold than originals. Many people have to have it because of the sheer size and than after firing it a few times retire it to the shelf. (Not unlike the owners of the originals).

You might be able to find a deal on a used one. Keep your eyes and ears open and post a want to buy ad in a couple of places.

I like mine, but find I shoot my 1860s much more frequently. When I touch off 60 grains of powder and a round ball, I prefer it to be from a rifle!

lately i have been shooting more colt 45s from mine. however i am getting mine worked on with some modifications so will see when i get it back.

I have always liked them--but then I like BARs, too. A very, very impressive gun. I got mine to admire and as a wall hanger as it is too big to shoot much IMHO. Got a Dragoon to shoot, and while only marginally smaller it's a bit more reasonable to use.

For shooting, however, my favorite is the Navy .36. Had a Colt 2nd gen. 1851 years ago that I shot a lot, and its replacement is a Uberti 1861 Navy which is a delight.

Have never fired the Walker.

When it comes to BP pistols there is the WALKER and then all the rest. This gun gets everyone's attention when it fires as the report is unique. If you can hold it up you can fire it with little or no problem as the recoil is tame. A few weeks back a rather small female (5' 2" and 100 lbs.) put a couple of rounds through mine and she loved it. She didn't think a 22 revolver was fun to shoot but this WALKER did the trick for her.

Yeah, the Walker is just plain sexy. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are other guns that make me go from 6 to 12... But the Walker holds the all time record.

First post on this forum.

Have had my new Walker to the range four times. I actually like the way it shoots. 45 grain of fffg, wonder wad, .454 ball and a wonder seal. Ten cylinders, no stiffness. Shoots exactly 6 inches high and one to the left. At 25 yards unsupported (all 4.5 + pounds) I get fair groups. Still not sure the spread is due to the pistol or me.
