I just bought a nice Mustang that shoots great. But I can't for the life of me get more than 5 rounds in either magazine. Both are Colt mags. Do you suppose the previous owner replaced the springs. Any ideas?

Do your mags have a mustang pony on the forward edge of the mag base plate? The center portion of the base should read COLT and then 380 AUTO under that. At the rear of the plate, there should be a capital M over an S. The side of the mag should have five staggered holes in the sides and when the mag is full you can see through the bottom hole and see shell casings in the other four higher holes. Try a mag loader to push the fifth loaded round down farther and then try and load the 6th round. Let us know how this comes out. If that fails, you could order new springs from Wolff and at the same time replace the plastic guide rod with a new Wolff steel guide rod and single guide rod spring.

They may be 5 round mags!

When the Mustang first came out it was supplied with 5 round mags. Some time later they came out with 6 rounders. When I get home I'll compare the 2 and see if I can identify a visual difference.

Checked the Mags

They have the Colt logo on the bottom plate, the words Colt 380 Auto, and the letter M in one corner. No S. There are 5 holes, but I only see rounds through the top 3 holes. Sounds like I may have a couple of the early magazines.

Magazines

As it happens, I ordered two magazines from that very source this afternoon. It will be interesting to see how the new magazines differ from the old. I took one of the old ones apart--I figure Colt either made the follower smaller, or used a stouter spring with fewer coils for the 6 round mags.

I just compared 2 mags, an old and new. The older 5 rounder has a notch on the lower left rear of the mag body. The newer 6 rounder doesn't have the notch. Also the top front has a bend that looks like it was dented that the older one doesn't have. I hope that helps. The Mustang is great. Small and easy to shoot. Good luck with it.

Notch on Old Mags

I see the notch you are referring to. Obviously, the notch keeps the follower from descending low enough to take a 6th round. Well, I've ordered two 6 round mags, and I think I will also order a couple of mags for a Government Model .380.

Hello,

I was aware of this for sometime but yall beat me to the answer.

However my question is why did Colt first put out a 5 round mag? The mags are identical but they crimped the first ones to keep a 6th round out. ??

Only thing I can figure is they must have had some doubts about the reliability of 6 round magazines, and later they must have satisfied themselves that they were reliable enough to release. It's a bit convoluted, for sure...
