I picked up a used G 23 from a friend the other week because I wanted to play with the .40 some. Had had it out to shoot the other day. Performed reliably. Accuracy was good with 180 gr. ball and OK with 165 gr. the ammo I had on hand. It's been over a decade that I've owned a Glock but wanted to try this one.

Now knowing that Glocks give a good deal of the case exposed I dropped a round in the chamber to look at that. Saw that but also noticed that the chamber was quite sloppy. The Winchester and Fiocchi ammo I had measured .420 over the case while the chamber itself measured .435. This leaves .0075" per side for the round to flop around the chamber. Also means a good deal of room for the brass to expand.

Is this typical for Glock barrels in .40 S&W?

Sounds about right but since I'm a pictures sort of guy on this topic having never made any measurements I'll have to defer to the more numbers oriented.

My first Glock was/is an early '90s model 20 with about as "generous" a chamber as you'll ever see. Same for my model 23 bought about the same time. I buy a little factory ammunition every five years or so but the rest is all my own stuff.

I began loading for the models 20 and 23 immediately after buying them and have never had a significantly bulged case. And that includes top loads in both cartridges as seen in several popular loading manuals.

The same is true for later Glocks I own. I understand people having different experiences, but for me this is a non problem through tens of thousands of Glock fired rounds.

I took a measurement of the chamber of my S&W Shield 9mm. The od of the round is .378 while the id of the chamber is .389. Not snug but more within the realms of what I'd expect with .0055 per side.

Looking at the chamber of a Colt barrel for the 45 acp I get a case od of .480 and chamber id of .4695 or just over .005 per side.

So it seems a generous chamber in the G23. Double the room of the others. At least the one in my hands.
