I say they are the same.
Other way around... Small rifle is safe to use in place of small pistol but NOT the other way around.I've heard that you can use the SPP in place of SRP but not the other way around.
I would bet money that there is some subtle difference.
I have seen that on another forum, but you know what they say about the internetI say they are the same.
This comes up from time to time. On another forum someone actually copied basically this email from CCI:
That their small pistol magnum and small rifle [not magnum] primers had the same material in the cup, the same thinkness in the cup and the cup is the same size diameter and depth. The charge is the same material, and the same amount of material.
They are the same.
Little late in the day for that, maybe MondayWHY DO YOU NOT call CCI and ask for it straight from the horses mouth ??
That shows the 550 spm is hottest of all the small primers. What about the cup thickness ?If you hear it on the Internet that it has to be true!. No they are not. This chart is old but a SPM actually is hotter than a SR
All rifle primers are harder material to withstand the higher loads not necessarily a hotter flame.
Just called and they are on PST according the their message and also closed on FriIt's only 3:00 in the afternoon in Idaho.

Good Point Wil. As this has been going around and around for years, I did just that back in August of 2013.
My Email to CCI.
With all the component shortages around, there is a lot of talk about primers and how some are identical to others and how they can be substituted.
An example would be your CCI 550 SPM and your CCI 400 SR primers. Is it true that these are indeed identical primers and the only difference is the # and the packaging?
I need CCI SR primers and I can only find 550 SPM primers. Is it OK for me to substitute the 550's for the 400's? This would be for a 223/5.56.
Thanks
Steve
Their Reply.
Steve, the specifications on these 2 primers are not the same and should not be interchanged. Not using the right loading components can lead to a high pressure situation and be very dangerous. Follow the load data in the manuals to make sure that you are not getting high pressures.

Straight from the horse, take it or leave it.

I am not sure of what "letter" you speak of, but.
I do recall a letter posted on this forum (I think) from CCI that said their Small rifle and Small Rifle Magnums had identical primer compound and the only difference was the thickness of the cup.
Damn, now I have to contact them again to put this to bed, sorry.
