I'm sure this must be an easy answer, but I feel compelled to ask here.

I have a Beretta Neos pistol with a Carbine Kit I got a while back. I have been tempted from the beginning to install the 16" barrel from the kit and just leave on the pistol grip.

I have read that a gun that begins as a pistol can have any barrel length. For a gun that can become a "rifle" and then return to a pistol, would there be a problem with using the long rifle length barrel without using the rifle buttstock?

Like in the photo illustration below.

The gun was purchased new as a pistol with a 4473 filled out.

The Carbine Kit was bought as basically parts with no 4473 involved.

Nothing wrong with it at all. (barring local restrictions on maximum size/weight for pistols)

The other direction (short barrel w/ stock) is where you would have problems.

No answer here but I have to state my jealous rage that you got the carbine kit. I have been looking for one for 3 years with no luck:)

Yep, it really sucks Beretta quit importing them. I bought it to be a lightweight tote anywhere gun. Now, I ponder letting it be a safe queen and selling it someday instead of putting nicks and scratches into it.

I read recently that Beretta hasn't quit importing them,,,
They only do it one time a year,,,
Who knows the real truth.

I got mine by filling out the "notify me when in stock" at Budsgunshop.com.

When I received their e-mail I did not hesitate,,,
I had mine on order within a half-hour,,,
Two hours later they were out again.

I've been offered a hefty profit for mine,,,
But it's such a fun little thing,,,
I'll keep it forever.

I got mine by watching Ebay religiously. I saved the search in my favorites, and checked it several times a day. It only took a couple months, and there were 10 available from a seller. I think I paid $199. I should have bought all of them, but thats not my style. They were gone by the end of the day.

The Carbine kit is a really neat option. I only wish Beretta would make the trigger better, and maybe charge a few dollars more for that. The only problem with the Neos Carbine is you are limited to 10 round magazines. It sure is shorter than a 10/22.

I have shot mine on the pistol frame.

I wish the carbine barrel was threaded

As stated above, you are perfectly legal with the carbine barrel on the pistol frame

Hello chicharrones,,,

Have you tried yours out as a long barreled pistol?

Only one time,,,
It didn't put a big thrill on me,,,
I did well enough resting it on my range bag,,,
But I couldn't hold it well enough off hand to hit anything.

I would love to try the 4.5" barrel on the rifle stock,,,
But that would be highly federally illegal.

I have two NEOS' that I keep in pistol configuration,,,
I bought a third NEOS just for the carbine kit.

It's been a rifle so long now,,,
I have forgotten how to change it back.

Anyone need a spare pistol grip?

Nope. Like a Walther SP22 or a Sig 250/320, the receiver is separate from the grip.

The pistol "frame"?
Its just parts.

That's all I'm thinking of. A long barreled pistol that's meant for forward support of some sort when shooting.

Like a Ruger Charger,,,
But on steroids.

I've forgotten what the minimum length of a rifle must be,,,
Does the pistol grip with the 16.25" barrel meet that?

Wouldn't want to accidentally break a federal law.

26" OAL including 16" barrel for federal definition of a rifle, not to mention the "designed to be fired from the shoulder" caveat. A firearm that has no stock, and a 26"+ OAL is just that, a firearm. It's not a pistol, not a rifle. A pistol with a 16"+ barrel and a OAL of under 26" is still a pistol under federal definition. Some states do have arbitrary maximum barrel lengths for pistols, or so I've read on the internet.
