Hello all, I posted this question in the reloading/handloading section of this forum, but haven't gotten any replies. Maybe it's just to new and no one has tried it yet, or maybe it will get more views here. Anyway here goes; at my LGS yesterday I saw some Federal made American Eagle 40 gr. FMJ 5.7 x 28mm ammo, and wondered if this is watered down like the FN SS197 ammo? Anyone try this stuff yet, and put a chorongraph on it? Thanks, LM.

I think this is the stuff announced in Jan. I have yet to see any in stock. I don't think it will go over well with 5.7 owners, I read the rated velocity is 1650fps. Pretty sure I can get real close to that with 7.62x25.

It is about the same speed as a round that was discontinued [SS196]. . . and it isn't much less in price than the faster SS197SR. If it was around $15 a box, that would be a good buy, regardless of the speed.

Thanks for the replys, around here, the American Eagle sells for $22.99 per 50rds. but that is cheaper than the FN SS197 ammo which is priced at $29.99 per 50 rds. FWIW it wasn't to long ago that I could buy the FN stuff for $19.99 a box. Seems like all the ammunition is going up, again. LM

FN factories shorted production of 5.7 for months 1-7 2012. No idea WHY, but that's official.

The factory FN 5.7x28mm will start to flow again soon. Wholesale prices are still hovering $20ish per 50 so "good" prices will be in the range of 22-25.

I have 4k rounds backordered here: http://www.fivesevenammo.com/shop/

ETA late July.

Cost was $20.74 per box at case pricing.

So, factory ammo at $29 is very much on the high end.
