Question RE M44 nagant zeroing.

About a month ago i had made the comment to the GF that the M44 mosin carbines for around 80.00 were one hell of a deal, not a sniper rifle by any means, but WAY more rifle than what you would normally expect for under 100.00
Yesterday i get a card, (from the cats) with the layaway receipt and a penny in it.
What she did was put in in layaway minus 1 penny, so i had to pay the penny, and got the rifle registered in my name.
BTW, this is something to consider if you ever want to get someone a rifle as a gift legally, that way it's registered to them.

Beautiful rifle, Izhevsk 1944 production, perfect bore/crown, excellent stock, matching numbers.

I still can't get over how solid this thing is, and regardless of the accuracy, it's at least 200.00 worth of rifle.
We'll see if it can hold minute of paper plate at 100, regardless, it's a good beater rifle.
It would appear that with this and the AK, i'm going "Russkie"


ANYHOO,, to my question, i know these things were zeroed with the bayonet extended, how much work am i going to have to do to zero it with the bayonet retracted/removed, is it really a BIG difference?

I am by no means an expert, but here goes.

If you remove the bayonet, it can be a real chore getting it back on, from what I hear.

I left mine zeroed witht the bayonet extended. The rifle actually balances better when extended. I don't know how accurate it would be trying to zero it with the bayonet closed. Something to do with barrel harmonics.

If you were to remove the bayonet, I'm not sure if you would need to adjust the zero.

I'm sure other can chime in.

Only your rifle knows for sure.

Some shift point-of-impact dramatically with bayonet extended... some don't as much, some barely at all. Shoot your M44 with bayonet in and out, with every variety of surplus ammo you can find, and some production stuff, too. Around here, Winchester is easy to get, although pricey.

There's enough variation in ammo and bayonet configuration (in, out, removed) to keep you, your M44, your chiropractor, and his Mercedes-Benz dealer happy for a long, long time.

i have huge respect for the men and women here in the US working the "arsenal of democracy" to its up most.
but i can only imagine the pressure on the men and women who made Mosins, hitler knocking on the door. atleast once, factory workers took up arms ( mostly pistols) and joined the fight when it reached thier gates.
and while quality may not be up to par with western guns of the time, i dare you to tell an old russian who made them some, 60 years ago, that its just crappy commie steel and inferior wood. these men and women would look on even the poorest quality mosin and say " i made that, and we won"

Some seem more effected than others if you fold the bayonet in while shooting. I've never noticed a significant difference when the bayonet (not the lug) is simply removed. This is easier to do on M-44's that haven't been peened in place, but is possible either way. The blades were designed to be removeable at the arsenals when they bent.

dont zero it with the bayonet, just adds more crap to your front end bbl harmonics. it will shoot nicely for you, you will be able to hunt with it , just fine.

I removed it and put it back on with no problem, this is an older izhevsk production, without the extra ear on the bayo mount.

The bayonets are pretty easy to remove and replace. Mine was off when I received it. Just have to hold against a little spring tension while installing a pin or screw(I forget which without looking).

It makes little difference with my gun whether bayonet is extended or not. Of course after reading other post, I'm thinking I got really lucky with an ugly gun.

It does take a pretty good smack with hammer onto drift to get the front sight to move on mine. I do me a good SMACK!

Beleive it or not, my m44, when sighted dead center at 50 yds with the bayo extended, will hit 6" left with it folded.So it CAN make a HUGE difference.or maybe it wont.you'll just have to find out for your gun, really.
