These might seem like silly questions, but I'm relatively new to semi-autos.

So, I have a Sig 228 that's been 100% reliable since I got it. Since I can't carry in my state, it's solely been a range gun. I clean and oil after every range trip. No problems.

However, let's say eventually the 228 will be a carry gun, or a home defense gun. How frequently must it be re-oiled (if not taken to the range) to ensure reliability? Once a week, once a month, etc.? I'm sure the answer to this question will differ for each individual, but I'm just trying to get a picture of everyone's comfort level.

Now, let's say hypothetically a carry/HD gun should be oiled at least once a week. I would unload the pistol and clean/lube. However, should I be worried about re-chambering the same "+1" round week after week? How do I avoid bullet setback? Do most people just rotate out the "+1" round each time they clean for a brand-new round?

And lastly, does unloading and reloading carry rounds in a mag (let's say removed during cleaning) adversely affect their reliability? I can see unloading/reloading rounds can cause scratches in the casings. Is this an issue?

Good question on the oiling - would like to know the answer to that also - I just clean and oil after shooting - is more necessary?

Well it varies with your environment/gun/carry location etc.

My personal rule is clean my gun at least once every two weeks. Even if I dont shoot it! And always after I do shoot it. You should be fine for two weeks......just check it. If the slide/frame is sounding dry then oil it a little.

For carry guns that get cleaned on a regular basis..I use miltec grease on my frame/slide rails and it stays in place very well..but collects debris also...thats why its good for a gun that gets cleaned often.

As far as the same bullet being loaded in the chamber. You can shoot you carry ammo..once a month or so. Or just rotate the rounds in you mag....put the last one from the chamber at the bottom of the mag....compare the OAL to other rnds and if its got setback......toss it! If not then just rotate it.

Hope this helps......I never got an answer to this question so I just do what works for me in my situation.

Shoot well

Working guns get cleaned/oiled every payday (twice a month, and easy to remember) if they haven't been to the range recently. Clean/oil after a range session or rainstorm, too.

when carry my sig p226, it gets wiped down to remove sweat and stuff. and I usually reoil it. When I get my 1911 tweaked out, I think it will become my new carry piece. thinner to carry stainless is a plus.

I'm with PCRCCW on this one.

Every 2 weeks, or more often if weather conditions dictate (gun got wet, for example).

Bullet setback is a concern. Especially if you clear the chamber and empty the gun every night. PCRCCW's recommendation to shoot up your carry ammo and put fresh in every month is a good one.

If you're concerned about the times in between, then just empty out the mag and put the chambered round on the bottom and then fill the mag up and chamber a new round. Then just keep rotating rounds. You won't chamber the same round more than once in a month.

I carry a parkerized 1911, often IWB, so I wipe my carry gun down with an oil-soaked piece of black t-shirt, frequently. At the beginning of the day, before I put it on, and at the end of the day, when I take my gun off to put it away, I field strip it, clean it, and relube it. This is fast and easy with a 1911. After I fire one of my pistols, I detail strip and clean it to better than new. The two best items in my cleaning kit, that save me the most hassle, are the Hoppes BoreSnake and the patch of black t-shirt soaked in Breakfree CLP. BTW, because my carry guns get such frequent maintenance, I use Breakfree CLP where others might use more adherent grease. I don't how easy it is to break down a Sig for cleaning, but this is a very thorough and convenient maintenance routine for me, taking very little time out of my day. I can finish cleaning my 1911 way before my wife finishes telling me about her day. ;)
