I've been looking hard at a Sig P232 at a local gunshop as a replacement for my 32 acp Guardian. I love the idea of a clean single action pocket pistol; however, my concern lies with how safe this gun would actually be for pocket carry. Are the mechanics pretty much the same as a traditional 1911, or are there some improvements that would allow this to be carried safely with round in the chamber inside ones pocket? I realize that no manufacturer is going to say it's ok, but what does everyone here say about it?

Yes, it is quite safe for pocket carry with the safety/decocker on...
Flip the safety and pull the trigger, bang.
I carry a Bersa Thunder 380, which is pretty much the same gun, there's always one in the tube, and the safety on.

IF the P232 380 is the same type I once owned, DA/SA *decocker-only (no safety) and one chambers one then decocks, putting gun back into 10lb DA pull (hammer down safely), there is ** no flip the safety, they don't have one.
As the decocker springs back up and one has, merely, a full 10lb DA pull/shot or, if one wants, thumb-cock hammer back into SA mode with 4.5.lb SA pulls for 8, or 7, shots depending on max load or standard load with mags that hold 7 rounds in single stack mode.

The not so good IMO:
Nice guns, but blow-back action is dirty and one, least mine, needs to dissemble, clean, totally, and reassemble them at, or before, 200 - 230 total shots fired, per (in-between) total cleanings, or, again, my ex 232 SL, would jam, guaranteed, after the first shot with max load 7+1 with JHP's or with standard load one chambered, 6 left in the mag, between the 2nd and third shots, of JHP's, per mag, every time there on, until "totally" cleaned. And that included interior walls of mags, as well.
The spent, dirty, blow-back action, powder got into everything, quickly, namely on the feed ramp and first 1/3rd of the mag interior walls and follower face, not to mention it mixing with the oiled rails, etc., and after the gun cooled down, it thickened up into a gooey mess, no joy, quickly.
Mine was from NIB thru 1450 rounds, and nothing but new WWB or Federal ammo, fyi, then sold it.

Actually, I did carry mine in my front pocket (cross draw) very comfortably, being a right-hand shooter.. shirt out
But with straight (down) pockets only..

Oh...now you tell me after typing a bunch of brilliant comentary...
Personally I'm leary of SA pocket carry. Too many things happen to a gun in a pocket throughout the day, but you may disagree.

A bunch of guys over at the SIGforum are saying that a lot of their P238's are having reliability issues. If I were you, I would try to hunt down an old Colt Mustang.
