Questions from a (hopefully not too stupid) noob...

First wanted to say thanks for the wealth of knowledge that is available on this site...as I become more involved with reloading, I'm sure I'll spend more time here...

My father in law is coming to visit and to help me get a reloading set up going. I know I've got the necessary equipment, but I'm still short on a few load recipes. I did a search for the specific bullets I'm looking for and didn't get too much conclusive stuff back. Here's what I'd like to reload:

Rainier Leadsafe 230 gr PRN (I've heard 6 of Unique, or 4.5-4.9 of W231)
Rainier Leadsafe 200 gr PRN (Rainier suggests using lead load data, or 10% less than an equivalent jacketed data)
Remington 230 gr FMJ (I've heard 5.9 of Unique)
Hornady Action Pistol 230 gr-it's a hollowpoint, but not the XTP

I have some Bullseye powder and Federal No. 150 primers. I'll be picking up some more primers and definitely W231 and maybe Unique powders tomorrow. I have a .45 ACP reloading manual, but I'm thinking of getting the 49th Lyman manual too

If anyone has load data or suggestions for these bullets, I would be all ears. Thanks in advance for the tips...

You can go to the powder manufacturer's websites and they have load data for all the powders they sell. Go to Hodgdens website for W231 info. Also the more manuals you can get your hands on the better.

Definitely pick up the Lyman manual. You can find lots of load data on the internet, but you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS cross check that against published data. The powder manufacturer's websites can be considered published info, but YMMV with other websites. A lot of it is good info for comparison. A lot of people have burned a lot of powder researching everything under the sun. If you come up with a question about how or why something is done a certain way, someone else has already had that question. The people on this board are a huge resource of knowledge and information. This pass time is safe if used with a large dose of common sense.

Try some ammo with the Bullseye you have. It was good enough for the US Army for a number of years. Flip-flopping on powder is a waste of time unless you are loading right at the limit of performance.

I have been to Hodgdon's website, but they have nothing listed for the bullets I'm searching for-I know I put the cart in front of the horse on this one...

I checked the Alliant Powder website regarding the Bullseye powder-no data on the bullets I have...doh!

Any other thoughts?

Bullseye 4.5 gr to 5.7 gr
COL 1.245

As I said before, cross check for yourself before using loads you find on the internet. One source is not good, two is better, three or more is best.

Our bullets are jacketed using an electroplating process and are softer than traditionally jacketed bullets; hence the recommendation to use lead bullet load data. If you only have access to traditionally jacketed load data, we recommend reducing maximum charge by 10%. A roll or taper crimp may be used with our bullets; do not over crimp.
