I think you'll find that a float tube on a AR is of great benefit. Personally I think not having at the behinning is more of a detriment than later. At the beginning, you don't understand all the complexities and that would help you get off to a good start.

Duly noted. This is not a particularly expensive part, and it appears that Bushmaster sells one that looks just like the normal A2 handguard, which I like. Tell me, is installing this part something that only a gunsmith would be able to do, or would someone who is mechanically savvy be able to pull it off without risking damage to the rifle?
 
Actually the float tube goes underneath the handguards. The RRA version is slightly stronger.

It is something you COULD do, but you will have to take the barrel off and re-headspace it.
