I have a nice safe for my rifles and pistols (the collection), but it isn't very quick to get into, and it's in a room other than my bedroom. It's actually a really nice home-brew safe that is ridiculously hard to break into, but I do plan to upgrade to a vault-type situation when I get my own house in a year.
I keep my snubby 642 next to the bed because lately it's been my daily ccw piece, but I really want to have quick access to a Glock 22 and an AR.
I worry if somebody broke in, the snubby probably is sufficient, but why scale down what I have with me at home when some major firepower is already owned and nearby? I have multiple AR's, multiple Glocks, and plenty of other excellent HD pieces, but they're all locked away in the safe. I worry in the high-stress of somebody breaking in, I might freeze up trying to go to the safe and dial in the combination.
Basically, I want some kind of numerical keypad, or even better - biometic safe that would go in the closet of my bedroom and hold a loaded AR and loaded Glock ready to go. I would probably only take one, but I'd like to have both options available to me. Something really quick and easy to get into in a high-stress moment.
I'm nervous lately because there have been a series of armed incidents around my house, bad enough that the cops are patrolling a lot lately.
The problem is that as I look around, everything that has electronic locks, specifically biometric, is huge. I'm thinking slimline. Just enough for one 16" rifle and one pistol.
The idea is if somebody broke in, the police are automatically called, and I'd arm myself and stay where I am. I'm not looking to play "hero", but I'm also not looking to play "dead-guy" on the news.
