Quick question- are there two different types of #3 shot? for example #3 birdshot and #3 buckshot or is #3 shot all the same?

Thanks, saw a box of "#3 shot" in Walmart the other day and realized i still don't know that much about shotgun ammo. All I have in my head is "birdshot of various numbers, 00 buckshot, slugs."

I am thinking you are looking at #3 birdshot. This has pellets of ~.140". #3 Buckshot is .250", and will be labeled "buckshot". Triple ought buckshot will be labeled 000 buckshot, and is .360".

If you saw it at Walmart, it is almost certainly #3 Steel shot for duck & goose hunting.

Others have already answered your question. Now, just to make you not feel bad, here's a story of mine:

My first shotgun was an 870 with a rifled barrel. I knew it was only good for slugs so when I went to buy ammo I found something marked #1.

If there's only 1 shot in the cup that's a slug, right?
