Hi. I have just recently got into hunting. I am looking to get my first hunting rifle. My dad might be giving me his Remington model 700 chambered in .270. Is this a good gun. I will mainly be hunting deer with this gun.

.270 First Hunting Gun

My Dad bought me a Remington 760 in .270 for high school graduation. I have now gone over to a bolt action, but there's no question that the .270 is plenty for deer. With a 130gr. bullet, it's nice and flat out a long way, and has plenty of kinetic energy. It is one of the best all-around calibers for the "one gun hunter," and will do about anything except Moose and the big bears pretty effectively. With light bullets, it's a great varmint rifle. What more could you ask from a first gun? -Your Dad did you right!:)

Dylon;

How much it kicks has as much to do with stock design as it does the caliber. But, having said that, the .270 itself isn't regarded by too many as a hard kicker.

OTOH, a guy I worked with & I were at the range at the same time. He was shooting a Remington 721 in .270 & I was shooting a .30-06. He complained of recoil & I asked him if he minded if I shot it. He said no, go ahead. So I did. The result was that it felt more like I got hit in the shoulder with a blunt axe than a rifle stock. But that was the 721, not the 700 you're talking about.

But, if it does bother you, try the 6.5 X 55mm Swedish Mauser.

How old are you? How big are you? The 1st .270 I shot cut a nice scope ring above my eye and broke my glasses (I was 25 at the time and weighed about 165 lbs). I thought I had been kicked in the head by a mule. Come to find out I was just holding the scope too close to my eye when I shot the gun. I had never shot a rifle with a scope before and most of my shooting had been with a military 30-06, a 22 or a 12 ga. shotgun. I would say this rifle should probably kick a little less than a 12 gauge but not by much. Just make sure you have it seated properly on your shoulder and keep your eye a safe distance from the scope. I have take several moose and numerous deer with a .270 and until last season it had always been my favorite deer rifle (now that I'm over the hill I prefer a .243 or 6.5X55).

would it kick more or less than a 11-87 with 3 in 00 buckshot. 12 gauge

I would rather shoot a box of 20 .270's over 20 12 gauge 3" magnums any day. If you can handle the kick of a 3" magnum you can handle the .270. Besides, if you're shooting at a deer you won't feel a thing.

Jeebus....What are they puttin in the water these days to make kids grow so tall...When I was that age, I was only at best, 5'5-5'6. I'm 6'1 now, but dang...Kid's are growing like weeds.

The .270 is wonderful caliber and will do just about anything in North America. I have a .30-06 and I can shoot 150-180 grainers all day long, with no issues, but I have a good Limb Saver on the stock. It helps tremendously. Good luck next season! Be safe.

In WW2 Germany, kids were given vitamins for growth, strength, endurance, and immune. I heard this from a woman who grew up in Nazi Germany. Hmm...
