I'm curious about what value this software would provide for me. If I were wanting to develop a load for my 50AE Desert Eagle, using a 335gr bullet, with a powder that I have not found any load data for, would this program be able to assist in development of such a load? As an example I'd love to try Hodgdon's Lil Gun as I think it would be a good fit, but there is virtually no load data for this combination that I can find anywhere. Would/Could/Does Quickload have the capability to do this?

Thanks in advance.

If the cartridge and powder are in the QuickLOAD database (as are both the .50AE and Lil'Gun), then the program has the capability to provide a safe start load.

It's still necessary to start low and work up slowly (maybe even MORE important). Of course, without ANY pressure-tested loads, you're on your own as far as your personal safety. And a properly-used chronograph would be critically important for determining where on the performance curve you are with YOUR handgun.

QuickLOAD is terrific software, but it's not the Holy Grail. It still pays to be cautious when playing with unknown forces that can kill you.

Thanks for the info RidgwayCO. What does the program require as input to calculate the pressures? Bullet length? Case capacity? Seating depth etc?

Thanks again.

Yes, yes, and yes.

If the bullet has a boat-tail, it wants the length of the boat-tail and the diameter of the smaller base. It wants case length, seating depth, bullet length, case capacity and bore diameter (it has reasonable defaults for the last two). The better the inputs, the better the output.

Also, I've found from other QuickLOAD users suggestions and my own personal experience that it's bullet database is sometimes off on bullet length. So, measure 5 of your own bullets and input the longest length of the 5. Some of it could be simply due to lot-to-lot difference (like a 0.15" difference) but others it's just plain wrong. In one instance I had a bullet I had measured at 1.435" and QuickLOAD's DB said it was 1.200"! That will change the pressure estimates just a wee bit...

How would you account for a bullet that has a concave base? Does it get that precise?

It does have the option to enter measurements for "hollow base". I'm not sure if that's different from a concave base or just different terminology for the same thing. I believe the bullet measurements are really to give a more accurate powder capacity reading as having a boat-tail or hollow base changes that vs what a flat based bullet would allow.

I've only owned QuickLOAD for a brief time (about 3 weeks). It was something I wanted for a few years but $150 for a piece of software you are unsure about is nothing to sneeze at. I have enjoyed having it quite a bit and play around with it when I get a bit of spare time.

You can always download the demo (although fairly limited) to get a feel for what it can do.

I tried the demo, I thought the interface was a bit awkward. I'm not sure I'd get my $150 worth though. I mostly reload pistol, and aside from wanting to try a different powder here and there, I can't see me using it that much.

The Quickload does not take a rank beginner by the hand and lead him out of the wilderness. It assumes the user has some knowledge of loading and blallistics. Which is as it should be for a program of this sophistication. I cannot imagine any handloader who considers himself an expert at least not experimenting with it. The information it provides is not in the usual loading manuals, and certainly not on any internet "if I do my part" amateur commentary.

Ouch, that hurt. Actually looking at the demo, you are correct, there is way more information available within this app that I'd ever use. The only thing I'd be interested in using it for is as I stated, developing a load where I couldn't find specific components for a load I wanted to try.

i was given a copy of quickload yesterday. i loaded it on my pc and cant for the life of me figure out how it works. now before anyone says it, i am in the process of reading the instructions. any tips on use would be great! heck, id even send the other copy to the person who would be my teacher and have patience over the phone! pm me for that! otherwise any general info would help me as well as the OP!
