I was asked the other day what i would use if i were to hunt deer just outside city limits and wanted to keep the noise level down. I suggested a smaller shotgun like a .410 or 20ga. with slugs or a lever action .357mag or 38spec. There wouldn't be many shots past 75 yards. What do you guys think? Or what do you have that seems to be on the "not so loud" side. Thanks

Anything effective AND quiet will be frowned upon by fish&game as a poachers weapon, IMHO, so check your local ordinances.
That aside, anything with a long barrel to powder ratio. There was an article in American Hunter about duck hunters using very long aluminum bbls. on their shotguns for this very purpose.

can't remember who makes them, but there is a type of shotgun barrel specificly FOR quiet taking of deer, believe it's called a "Metro barrel" or Metro system.
there was a link to an article about the use of these, in a post here on THR awhile back (possibly as long as 2004). seems Central park has a deer population that has to be kept in check
basicly it's a very long lighter weight barrel to allows all powder combustion to happen in the bore, reducing, or almost eliminating, noise and muzzle flash (or at least reduces them to levels that don't spook the locals)

I'd say a can or a subsonic load out of a bolt-action of some type. The crack is the loudest part, ususally, but I could be wrong (never fired subsonic stuff myself)
