What are your quintessential firearms?

For me:

Autoloading Pistol: Mauser C96 (1911 a close second)
Autoloading Rifle: M1 Garand
Bolt Action: Mauser 98 (often duplicated, rarely replicated)
Assault Rifle: AK47

What do you say?

Autolading Pistol: SIG P210
Autoloading Rifle: Stgw.57
Bolt Action: Lee Enfield no.4 if we're talking military, Holland & Holland deluxe bolt action if not
Assault Rifle: SIG 55x

Autoloading Pistol: Glock 17 (original 1980's)
Autoloading Rifle: B.A.R
Bolt Action: Accuracy International L96
Assault Rifle: Stoner Mk 23

Autoloading Pistol: P 08 "Luger"
Autoloading Rifle: Colt AR-15
Bolt Action: Steyr Scout
Assault Rifle: Colt M-16

Autoloading Pistol: 1911
Autoloading Rifle: AR10
Bolt Action: Enfield 1917
Assault Rifle: AR15

Autoloading Pistol: 1911
Bolt Action: m40a3
Autoloading Rifle: M1 garand
Assault Rifle: Sig551

depends on situation

if you want all around take care of everything-
Autoloading Pistol: 1911
Autoloading Rifle: Marlin Modle 60 or Ruger 10/22 at a second
Bolt Action: Rem 700
Assault Rifle: AK47

If you want battle ready-
Same but with a Rem 7400 replacing the rimfires

Autoloading Pistol; Glock 23
Autoloading Rifle; Olympic K40 (AR 15 in 40 S&W, accepts Glock mags)
Pump Shotgun; Remington 870 express

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION!

Autoloading Pistol: XD or Glock in .45ACP
Bolt Action: Rem700
Autoloading Rifle: M14
Assault Rifle: AR15
Other: any kind of mag fed semi auto rifle in .22lr.

Lots of people wouldn't choose the AR15 because of reliability issues, however, for some reason my AR works smooth ALLLLLL the time. Must be broken? At any rate, I wouldn't mind whipping out the AR in a bad situation.

Also, I chose polymer framed pistols because of the extra shot capacity. That can be critical in a real world situation. Sure you've got yourself 200 mags for that 1911, but do you carry them all on you? Are they all loaded?

As for the autoloading rifle, well, the M14 is about as good as the Garand (shoots the same round), but again, can accept more ammunition in a single load.

Finally the .22lr. Probably the most important. Great for hunting small game. Great for keeping the noise down when you don't want the locals to hear you. Ammo is lightweight, plentiful, and CHEAP!

The focus seems to be pretty narrow so far. I think we might need to broaden the horizons a bit more. It seems to me that there are a lot of "quintessential" guns in history, each one highly evocative of particular times, places or events.

A partial list:

Brown Bess musket
Kentucky rifle
Colt 1851 Navy
Colt SAA
Colt 1911
Luger P08
S&W model 36 Chief's Special
S&W model 10 M&P
S&W model 29
Glock model 17
Ruger Standard model
Mauser 98
Winchester 1873
Remington 700
Remington 870
M1A1 Thompson Submachine gun
M1 Garand
AK-47
M-16/AR-15

I chose mine on quality rather than practical performance because no specific situation was stated. We might be talking about general military applications, special forces, law enforcement, self-defence/home-defence/SHTF, target shooting, hunting etc.

Autoloading Pistol: Springfeild Armory 1911
Autoloading Rifle: SVD , M1 carbine
Bolt Action: Remington 700 30.06
Assault Rifle: Romainian AK-47 , M4 carbine

I was'nt sure if I should post my answer based on what I have or also what I dont..yet

So Ill say based on what I have.

(1)Ruger Mk1
(2)M1 Garand(dont have a M14-M1a but thats also a given)
(3)Winchester repro 1886 45-70..that rifle is just class, workmanship is great, just a ton of fun to shoot
(4)H&K USP .45auto
(5)Ruger Blackhawk .357Not expensive but reliable, fun and accurate
(6)Persian Mauser 8mm
(7)AR-15 Hbar...it has its lovers and haters, but for me as a target rifle very accurate and again fun...not so fun to clean it though
(8)M1903a3 C-stock Springfield
(9)Glock 23

Ready for anything?

Pistol: Glock 20
Revolver?: Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 (4 5/8'') SS
Bolt Action: Winchester 70 HBBL .308
Autoloader:M1 Carbine or M-1A
Assault Rifle:AK-47
Shotgun: Remington 870 SuperMag W/ 21'' and 28'' BBL and removable tube extension
Rimfire: Ruger 10/22

Everything but elephants is covered and possible. Maybe through in a 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun with handloads your set all over. Hunting, SHTF, Military, FUN, and life in general.

Balance is the key, I personally would choose the carbine over the 308.

"quintessence: the pure essence or perfect type"

For me, the essence, call these to mind:

Autoloading pistol: Model 1911A1 .45 ACP, 9mm Luger & Broomhandle Mauser
Revolver: Colt Peacemaker in .45LC and S&W .38 Special
Levergun: Winchester Models 1873 & 1894
Shotgun: Side by side 12 guage with hammers, 12 guage pump
Autoloading rifle: M1 Garand and AK47
.22 Rifle: In the future I think it will be the Ruger 10/22
Bolt action rifle: K98 Mauser and 1903 Springfield
SMG: Thompson 1928A1, German MP40, M3A1 Grease Gun, Sten Gun Mark 2, Degtyarev PPD
LMG: MG 42 and BAR
HMG: Model M2 Browning .50 caliber machine gun ("Ma Deuce", there is no other for this category)

If I could choose what to have today:

Autoloading pistol: Model 1911A1 .45 ACP
Revolver: Ruger GP100 or Dan Wesson .357 magnum
Levergun: Marlin 1894
Shotgun: Remington 870 12 guage pump
Autoloading rifle: Springfield Armory M1A or M1 Garand
.22 Rifle: Ruger 10/22
Bolt action rifle: Remington 700 BDL in .308
SMG: H&K MP5
LMG: None, couldn't afford to feed it
HMG: Same as above, but would love to be able to shoot a .50BMG one time

Glock for autopistols. They all look pretty much the same. I fancy the full size frame models in .45 and 10mm, in particular, the Glock 20.

The M29 .44 Rem Mag as the revolver. "Do you feel lucky, punk?"

For shotguns I have to say the M870.

Autorifles would be the AK or the FAL.

Bolt rifles, M700.

Autopistol: 1911-A1 in .45
Bolt Rifle: Rem 700 in .308
Battle Rifle: FAL
Battle carbine: AK-47
Small game/pests/quiet work: Ruger 10-22 and 22-45
A 12 gauge shotgun

what, no citori? meh, i can't afford one either.

everybody needs a 30-06 in their safe. effectively, the rest is icing on the cake.
