That shot looks like it hit a jugular; it definitely doesn't look like it could have hit the spine. So it likely ran at least a few yards, but not likely more than 100. That would mean it was probably shot less than 30 seconds before it laid down. Certainly not enough blood on the ground to indicate a thorough bleed-out. It's probably not dead yet.
Well then I'm probably wrong lol.I don't know, I killed my first deer with a shot almost identical to that, just up a few inches closer to the head (was a bad shot on my part), and it was DRT, didn't run, just fell over, kicked for a few secs and that was it.
Could just be my shot severed it's jugular completely, while TC's shot just clipped it enough to bleed out but not kill it instantly. It probably didn't kill mine instantly but by the time I shot it, got down out of the stand and walked about 50 yds over to it, it had already died.Well then I'm probably wrong lol.
I've never killed a deer at all; just answered based on my limited (but actively growing,, FWIW) knowledge of the body and it's functions.
In Nebraska that deer would be legal on an either sex permit, or an antlerless only ( doe or antlers under 6 inches )Yep!
Eyes closed is a dead give away. Another reason for concern is if button bucks are not legal to take in your state. Where I live that deer will get you a ticket and the deer taken from you.
STW
So you were doing all this dragging around on the living critter?
It's still alive. The tongue isn't hanging out.
Answer is no. A whitetail never dies with it's eyes closed.
