How many of you think R Lee Ermey would make a great NRA president? I think he'd help the cause a lot. What are your thoughts?

He likes firearms but that doesn't mean he likes them in the hands of civilians. I haven't heard anything to really give a hint if he leans one way or the other. That said, MailCall! is the greatest show of all time.

Considering what we get when we think we know a candidate for any office R. Lee Ermey is probably an excellent choice.
If he was ever so inclined to infringe on American's rights, R. Lee saw what happened to zumbo, so I don't think he will make that mistake.
But does he even want the job?

I've read somewhere when interviewed he expressed some very pro RKBA sentiments. Could be better candidates, could be worse.

Oops, I'll add this about him. He's been a pretty avid Glock spokesman for a while. I assume he wouldn't do that without being for civilians' fire arm ownership. In the most recent Glock Annual he did a Q+A, to a 'What's next?' question he said:

"I'm working on developing a cartoon. The character is a hard-core conservative Archie Bunker-type Marine who screws up. His punishment is that he's sent to San Francisco about the worse place you could send smoeone like that. There's also lots of charity stuff. I'm doing the Unmet Needs program with the VFW (unmetneeds.com), which supports families of troops. I'll be in Okinawa with the troops this November and doing Toys for Tots in December."

As to whether he wants to job or not? I have no idea. I was just thinking about it and thought maybe if people started making enough noise about it he or the NRA would start thinking about it.

How about President of the United States? He's got more military experience than the last two, and he's most likely pro RKBA. And he can constuct a sentence.

No. I've met him, and something just holds me back.

Maby it's because it's they way he spent so much time making excuses for kissing Jack Black (Something I wasn't even aware of till then)

Or maby it's the snake oil, almost politician like smoothness...

I don't know. All I know is something about him bothers me (After meeting him, before I would of said HE!! YES) And so I have to vote no.

Hollywood likes him ... for me thats a red flag.

But if he turns out to be at least as pro gun as Hesston, I believe he'd be a good NRA President.

I have to know more before I can vote yay or nay.

He's got his own forum ... maybe one could learn about him there http://www.rleeermey.org/

Seems like a great guy.....

But I think his publicly perceived persona is a little over the top. I like the President we have now. When you look at her there is nothing about her that screams gun nut. With her persona she can attract a lot of undecided folks to the fold. R. Lee has a definite persona that is an either you like him or you don't. Ex-military types will usually find him likable. Grandma's vote is up for grabs, gun nuts we got. I think Charlton Heston forced a lot of borderline people to rethink their positions. We need a person who will force mainline Americans, the so called silent majority to at least think about the Constitutional issues involving RKBA.
I would not vote against R. Lee but I would prefer to look for someone better.
JMHO.

Maybe he's a little too extreme and somebody like Tom Selleck would be better and not rub people quite so roughly?

I agree with peace, though I voted yes. He would be a good president, but I think someone who can attract the average American would be best. Ermey would still be great in some capacity working with the NRA. Maybe not as pres, but Ermey would be a great guy to have working actively for our rights.

Now there is where my vote would go..

+1 on Tom Selleck...

I abstained from voting because the vote was not just Yes or No, but with qualifiers and the qualifiers kill it for me.

If I voted Yes it would be because I believe R. Lee would be competent, and a good President but the choice says "Yes, he would be great for the NRA." Tom Selleck I believe would be great for the NRA.

If I voted No, it would only because I believe there are possible better candidates for the job not that "he wouldn't do any good for the NRA", as the poll states.

Thus the qualifiers force me to abstain.

R. Lee rubs many people, including myself, the wrong way with is macho Marine persona. Which is fine for what he is doing now, its part of his appeal to many people, but it would not work in a professional enviroment where you want people to take the messanger seriously. He would drive many fence sitters, and women, away from the message of the the RKBA. We need someone plain spoken who would be a good will ambassodor for us to the rest of the world. Tom Selleck would be a very good choice since he is well respect among Americans and especially liked by women which is a important demographic to appeal to in today's America. He can not be easily painted as a raving gun loon by anti's. He is articulte, passionate yet collected and very importantly knowledgeable about the subject. He knows how to debate people without resorting to rhetoric and angry lecturing about the misdeeds of the Antis. Another wise choice would be a minority, such as an hispanic that could appeal to the growing Southern minorites in this country. Remember in 25 years at least 1/2 this country will be of spanish speaking origin. We need to represent all of America and not just cater to the current white male majority. Other wise we will find ourselves behind the 8 ball with no rights.

I enjoy Lee Ermey but he's not the best choice for NRA high office, at least judging from his public persona. The Marine DI image scares a lot of people off. We need to present the RKBA in a professional, pragmatic, and rational manner, the way the Founding Fathers would have. No pandering, just a sober communication of responsible gun ownership and what it means our self-defense and the defense of our most important civil liberties.

Instead of celebrities, how about someone who is better politically connected that can actually get some serious work done on rolling back anti-gun laws.

I know the NRA is wealthy and powerful, but I can't think of any major accomplishments that they have achieved recently that have directly helped average gun owners.

I think Gunny would be a great "Face of the NRA," but have to consider that maybe he won't be the best President.

Tom Selleck gets my vote for President of the NRA. If nothing more, he would piss off Rosie O'Donnell and the Million Moron Marchers to no end.

I'd vote for him just for the chance to see him go into one of his Full Metal Jacket style barrage of insults on Brady, Feinstein and McCarthy

:neener:

Tom Selleck would be a bit more eloquent I reckon.

As a spokesman to replace Heston, sure. Whether or not he should be going in front of committees on the hill I don't know. I've never seen him debate. But then again Heston didn't do much trench work as President, either. That can be left to others.

R. Lee has said positive things about civilian RKBA. I think this was even linked to and discussed on this very forum. He's heavily involved in the civilian sector marketing campaign for Glock, at any rate. I don't think he'd be that big of a sellout that he'd sell the things with one hand and condemn them with the other.

He would make a great orator for the NRA for a host of reasons, beginning with the fact that he's famous, passing through the fact that he's damn good at getting to the point (even if, sometimes, in a crude sort of manner), and ending with the fact that there isn't much talking back you can do to someone who's put his life on the line for his country when you... well, haven't.
