i'm not a shotgun person,
i've hunted my share of upland game with them, and being from the great state of IN the politicians have looked out for my well being by making sure that any deer hunting done within state boarders is done with shotgun, this is about to change with the 2008 deer season as we can now use rifles that use revolver or pistol ammo.

i have used and owned auto's ,double barrel side bys, pumps even combo guns (Savage Mdl.24's ) ,and lowly bolt action Poly choked ____bergs, not to offend any one, and not to leave any one behind an O.U. was out of my price range in my earlier days.

but i have never had the opportunity to posess a single barrel break open (thats what we called them) shotgun until recently.

it's a J. C. Higgins ( who was that masked man? i dont know but he left this silver shotgun shell) 16 ga. 26" bbl. 2 3/4" mod. choked.

some one had "dolled" up the wood with nice yellow spar varnish, the metal had it's share of crusties but the bore was 100%

two months later: nice case color reciever, the crusties on the bbl. weren't
bad enough to reblue as of yet, oil finished stock and splinter fore arm turned out to be walnut of decent grain. the innards were cleaned and polished to go with the rest of the makeover.

so what i wind up with is a Savage 94 C. must have been a zillion made so it's not worth any thing. but when i hold this thing in my hands, its light weight ,ease of pointing just brings back memories of my first shotgun.

ANYONE ELSE A SINGLE BARREL FAN HERE'S YOUR CHANCE!

I don't own a single-shot shotgun right now, but I started off with "Pops" old Savage/Stevens Mdl 94b in 16-Ga.

"One-Shooters" still posses great utility value...one propped up back the back door to keep the fox outta th' henhouse, etc....with light loads, good trainer shotguns for beginners.

And can be pressed into HomeLand Security duty.....see posts here from "sm", Lee Lapin, Dave McCracken and others about this use of the single-shot shotgun, along with "trainer" use.

While not ultra "Tack-Tickle", there are still a lot of good things going for the break-open gun.

Usually the first time I hunt with a younger than me guy(there seems to be more of them younger than me's than there used to be) with a pump or auto I get
:neener:your going to hunt with a single shot pea shooter:neener:
on the way out
on the way in I usually here them mumbling

In my opinion With the exception of the brown bears If you can't take anything in North America with a single shot you need to work on your shooting and hunting skills

My first shotgun was a hand-me down Iver Johnson .410 from my uncle. Stock was banged up, blue wasn't perfect, but it shot great. Just the right thing for a ten year old boy. It felt right and shot straight from the first day I had it. I kept shooting it long after all the rest of the boys my age graduated to pumps and autos. Over the years, it has taken more birds than all the rest of my shotguns combined. When I got married and bought a ranch, it did "kitchen duty" for about 20 years. It hung over the kitchen door and my wife used it to shoot all the snakes and varmits that wandered into the yard. It's the gun I taught all four of my daughters to shoot on. I have since moved to the city but it still above the kitchen passageway. It collects more dust than varmits these days, but we still have the occasional two legged variety wander by and the wife likes having it handy.
