Hello,

My new to me 16 ga Pardner single shot is clearly marked full choke on the bbl.
Got my calipers out and its tough to measure but I get .637-.640.
Cylinder is supposed to be .662 I think and full choke somewhere on the order of .627-.630.

I am okay with the relaxed choke as I plan on sending foster rifled slugs down it for fun.

Was simply wondering if this is common? That is an inexpensive shotgun not have exact choke measurements on the bbl?

CHOKE SPECS:

I didn't review it completely, but I'm sure somewhere in there is a disclaimer about variabilities between mfrs and barrel lengths and shot size and what not.

There was also a small article in the American Rifleman fairly recently about patterning, regulating, stock fitting for shotguns (how much cast on or cast off, drop at comb, length of pull. phase of moon, etc. to move the pattern center to where you want it.) I think it was in the "Dope Bag" section, or maybe "Reader's Questions," but I'm not sure.

If I find it, I'll ETA it.

Terry

Measuring the choke at the muzzle gives you a rough idea, but the only way to know the true choke performance is to pattern the gun. A full choke will give you 70+ % of the pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yards. Point of aim is a whole other issue. Just shoot at a large sheet of paper and draw a 30" circle around the center of the pattern. Many newer shotguns have less physical constriction than older guns since todays ammo tends to pattern better than that of years past.

Found it. March 2016 American Rifleman page 42 by John M. Taylor, "Shotgun Barrel Regulation."
