I just got my rack grade M1 in the mail yesterday. After I got my dad's in the mail I had to have one for myself.

-What I noticed

The rack grade rifle had more intact bluing than my dad's Field Grade rifle. It's stock was also in better condition.

Same HRA replacement trigger group. Why do so many of these show up?

the crown looked a little rough but it passed the "bullet in muzzle" check (with about 3 or 4 mm of space between the muzzle and the neck of the catridge case). The bore was a little dull looking but definately intact and shootable. I dropped a bullet into the chamber and it slid in fine.

This weekend I'll have to test fire it.

Well, the difference between the rack, field, and service grades is the throat and muzzle wear. Finish doesn't factor in. So that's why you can get a great looking rack grade but a horrible looking service grade. It's all in the bore.

I suggest detail stripping the whole gun before shooting it. Make sure it's completely clean and the parts are good. When you reassemble it, grease it appropriately.

I bought one at the north store while at Perry earlier this month. My choice on a rack grade instead of something else?
I picked a rebuild from 65 that the reciever was still in its prestine condition from 53 and everything else was either reconditioned or looked new as the stock did. Figured for $325 I wanted nice parts to put with a new match grad barrel like a wilson to use in garand matches. So I would end up with a all like real nice garand match legal rifle that will look good and should shoot great for a little over $500.
It said the TE was a 6 as why it was a rack grade. Measured it with theeir gages and it had a TE of 6 and a ME of 2.5. Got it back here and used the original steel gags and it came out to a TE of almost 4.5 with the ME of a little over 2. I just love the soft metal gages they use sometimes. From what I was told by a few guys that collect them was when it was rebuilt in late 65 the barrel was put on because it gaged good.
It has a 11-43 barrel still in the white on it. Will see how it fires first but more than likely will pull it off and find a 43 receiver rack grade next time I go and have a correct 43 barrel and reciever combo.
I saw like 4 others on the rack in the same condition and reason for being there and if I new I would of bought them also but do not know much about them other than I wanted one for garand matches.

I personally dont do "matches" and what not being as I'm not an incredible shot myself.

I do however enjoy old rifles and that's what I got! :D fun stuff.

maybe some day I'll mount it next to my dad's garand
