To me, truck gun also implies the one long arm you’re likely to have with you outside of your home. Break down on a back road and have to hike out? Run into an outlaw biker gang? Maybe a drug deal in the sticks. What would you choose then
I agree with @Skylerbone and others with the definition of a Ranch/Truck gun.
I would like to add that the firearm for the task may vary depending on your situation and location. @Hog huntin Harry wanted an accurate bolt rifle out to 250 yards. Skylerbone likes the versatility of the AR platform.
When I lived in Wisconsin and now in South Carolina my choice is different.
A short barrel pump shotgun fills the need the best.
If I lived in areas with more wide open spaces I would go with @Armored farmer and a Ruger American Ranch Rifle. I like high capacity clip feed bolt rifle.
If money were no object(for me it always is) I would have a Henry Long Ranger or BLR with a 22” barrel in .358 Winchester or an AR-10 .338 Federal with a 22” barrel. The rifle would have a generous recoil pad and if it were a BLR it would have extensive trigger work.
