My brother and I went out to our local indoor range on Sunday for the first time a long time. We were somewhat dismayed that the range rules disallowed firing both CCI/Blazer ammo and the white box Winchester value packs. Especially since my brother had 2 boxes of Blazer and I had a 100 round white box. Is this a common thing?

Their reasoning behind the the white box is reliability, too many squibs and loading issues. Their reasoning behind Blazer is aluminum cases mixing in with the others on the floor. Guess it cuts into their ability to resell used brass...

Anyone know of a pistol range in the Wilmington, Delaware or Delaware County, Pa area that doesn't have these kind of rules so we can shoot up what we have?

I've fired many thousands of rounds of Win. white box in .40SW over the last few years. I have never had a squid load or any other type of malfunction attributed to the ammo.

Yep they are in it for the money. I.E. they can't resell brass with Blazer in it. Also anything they can do to make you buy THEIR ammo (even if questionable reloades) they will try to pull. I have been known to stick white box ammo into Win Silvertip HP box or others if that is their stupid rules.
Rules like no exposed lead (that CAN be range safety if poor vents) or no mag loads (also can be range safety/comfort) and limits on caliber etc as well.

they just want you to buy their ammo. they make more money that way. i have shot tons of winchester white box ammo, and so have my friends. never heard of any of them having squibs.

I have shot thousands (and thousands) of rounds of white box value pack in 9mm. I have never had a single squib or misfire of any kind.

I wouldn't go back to that range.

Cheers,
ChickenHawk

Considering its the best local range there is unfortunately me going somewhere else is unlikely. Pickings are kinda slim. Plus I have a membership that gives me free rentals and range time. I can live with them being picky about some of that stuff.

I actually picked up m first brick of Blazer rimfire ammo, and put 150 rounds through my rifle today. Exactly 1 dud in 150 rounds, so far. Not so good. I still think the are in it for the money, though. YMMV. :)

I have shot hundreds of thousands of rounds of all types and have never had a dud or squib that cannot be directly attributed to anything other my own reloading or using 100 year old crap ammo salvaged from some 19th century shipwreck.

MrAcheson,
Which range did you visit? Sounds like Targetmasters...
I do all my shooting at Omalanden Public Range (sp?), Rt. 9 just south of New Castle. Never had a problem with ammo there, I've shot through many boxes of Winchester. Also, never experienced a bad Winchester round by the way. Omalanden's a covered range, but not indoors, so it can be a bit chilly in the winter but it is a great range nevertheless.

Good shooting!

Dump your WWB into an ammo can. It's none of their business what you are shooting as long as it is not harming anyone else. Can't say as I blame them for the aluminum stuff. I try and pick all mine up and throw it in the trash but some always makes it in front of the line. CCI Blazer comes with brass cases now and it doesn't cost that much more. Just FYI.

I do believe that I'd be tempted to call their bluff on the white box stuff though. Tell them that is all you shoot and you aren't paying their high prices and you won't be back with that policy. Let your money do the talking.

As was noted earlier, they just want your brass and they want you to purchase their ammo.

BUT, DON'T DESPAIR. Blazer just changed over to brass cases. You can buy it at Natchez (www.natchezss.com), along with the "old" style Blazers that they are running a clearance sale on. (New 9mm brass ammo is $5.20/box. Old aluminum-cased 9mm Blazer is $4.49 /box while quantities last.

I just bought 20 cases (400 boxes) of the old style Blazer (enough to last about 8 months). Saved $240. If the new brass Blazer is as good as the oild style ammo, it will be excellent ammo.

Keep some of the boxes and trays that the range ammo is sold in.

Load them with your White Box Value Pak stuff at home, before you come in....

I won't say that I have done this, but I've seen it done!!

At IDPA we can shoot only Winclean indoors and anything that has an enclosed bullet(back end) outdoors...lead issues I guess.....but other than that anything goes at my regular range........sounds fishey to me too....:scrutiny:

I will have to admit that the Winchester White Box value pack fodder has gone WAY downhill in quality, the last few years. It's quite aneomic in velocity, and I have seen it create some FTF. I still shoot it for practice-- the price is right, and I can reload the brass. But even though it was a standard for good old military ball duplication for many years, I just don't think it qualifies as "The Good Stuff," any longer.

If a range has identified an ammunition that contributes to failures to fire or malfunctions, it's not at all a bad idea to disallow that ammunition. FTFs and squibs can create unfortunate distractions that cause safety problems.

And if they're going to have to sweep up the brass, why shouldn't they get to sell it?

I have no problem with them reselling brass. If they didn't resell brass they would have to pay somebody to take it off their hands and that would cost them money. What I do have a problem with is the range disallowing ammo simply to maximize their revenue stream either from ammo sales (white box) or brass sales (blazer).

BTW I swept up more brass their than their employees did. I'd rather not end up on my butt because I slipped over the last guys pile of .45acp .

I'm with ChickenHawk...

thousands of rounds without a single problem...
I wouldn't return to that range ever!

Theres a local indoor range that I refuse to go to.
1.I can't stand the guy that owns it
2.Big sign that says"Do Not pick up brass"!
I figure if I bought the ammo (new, not reloads from the range)
the hell with them,I'm picking up MY brass!

I think the white box rule is dumb. I used to shoot at a local range that recently stopped allowing CCI blazer ammo. The reason was that to sort out the Al casing cost more in labor then they were making on the brass. They were completely cool if you were shooting wolf or other steel casing since a magnet would do the seperation for you.

I've been to a range that had some strange ammo rules; in addition to the Blazer ban, they wouldn't let me shoot 9mm UMCs that I'd brought with me; I had to buy the identical 9mm UMCs from them, and they held the ammo that I brought behind their counter until I was done shooting. I also know of ranges that will not let you bring any ammo onto their range; you have to buy their factory ammo; they claim it is an insurance issue.

I've seen the "Blazer Rule" before, but never the Winchester White Box one. I've shot thousands of both in many different guns and calibers without a single problem with either.

As mentioned above, it's all about them making money.

I would imagine people have "reboxed" their Winchester White Box to avoid this rule. Sort of makes you go hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...
