I went to shoot the "fun shoot" at my local indoor range and got ripped on ammo. I can generally pick up winchester white box for my .45 for 10.00 or so. Well at the range all they had was S&B and CCI blazers, so I went with the S&B which shoots fine but they charged me 13.75 per box when every where else its 9.50 per box. So much for supporting my local business. I will go to another place to get ammo....sheesh I am a little ticked at their prices. :cuss::mad:

Just a side note I reload lead and the range doesnt have proper ventalation system for us to shoot lead. So this month I dont think I will renew my membership. I can go other places to get screwed on ammo and range fees for less money that can go for reloads. I just had to rant on this.:banghead: :banghead:
 
can you bring your own ammo to the range?
i went to a local range. 2 box of 45 reload, 3 paper target. ends up $40. ($12 rent fee, so that's like abou $13 or so for the reload ammo).
i don't think i'll be going there anymore. but they did have ventilation, i can feel it when he turns it on since i was the only one there.
i bought ammo from natchez, i end up about $10.50 per box of 50.

Pay a bit more for TMJ bullets, reload TMJ for range trips.
Maybe?
 
My range is the same way. Something alittle funny happened at the counter one day. I was standing there waiting to get targets and a lane when one of the new shooters asked the owner where he could get ammo.

The owner stated that he sold ammo. I piped up and started telling him about this place where I buy all my ammo.(I buy in bulk and get pretty good prices) A guy down the counter spoke up and said why don't you buy from the range?(kinda snotty )

I said, when his prices come down, I will. (With one of those if was any of your concern looks)

Didn't do any good, but it was fun ribbing this guy. I do beleive he would charge to tell you what time it was.
 
Buying ammo at the range is like buying candy at the movie theater.
 
I agree with noting high prices of ammo at ranges but, this being America, you don't have to buy it if you don't want to as you've (as well as I've) decided. There will always be someone to come along willing to pay their price. Usually, it's someone who doesn't mind paying and extra $1 or $5 and they usually buy just one or two boxes to shoot.

There are some cases where I can see range ammo should be used. Some places I've been to require that you use only range ammo when you rent their guns. Understandable. Don't what a hot rodder putting a double charged load through the gun.

It'd like popcorn and pop at the movie theaters.
 
Usually I pick up the ammo somewhere else, but I was there and only had lead reloads. At the present time I only reload lead...its all I have for the moment. I would like to reload fmj or tmj but I dont have them yet. In my town there is no good source for it.

I like shooting outdoors better anyway.
 
yeah, that's why i don't go there anymore. i guess if you gonna keep up with that attitude, you'd lose business. :banghead:
 
It costs the range to buy & store ammo in addition to the ridiculous insurance fees they pay so that you do have a place to shoot. I presume that you shoot there because it is convienient to shoot there, you pay for this privilege.

Online & warehouses usually have little overhead compared to 'brick & mortar' operations.

Vote with your feet, but give some consideration to the real costs of operation for these businesses.
 
I brought the wrong ammo a few times and had to buy range ammo.

Another time I was coincidentally close to a range with just my CCW and only carry ammo.

I went in and paid my range fees bought the $13.50 PMC
the owner asks: "wheres your gun"

I was kind of confused as to how I should answer.

I ended up telling him I was going to practice with my CCW
Still not sure if that was the right answer.
 
I don't know what the guarantees are on the range reloaded ammo, but it is cheap, I think 50 .40 S&W was like $4.00 and .38 special was like 2.00 for 50.

But the new ammo was pricey.

And this range doesn't charge by the hour, I wouldn't be able to do that... they actually let you leave and come back, you don't have to pay again.
 
I don't ususally spend more than 2 hours at the range
so an hourly rate would be good for me.

Most of the ranges I go to are per gun.. per shooter, per target
always something cute like $3.57 or $4.54 per gun.

I like to bring a friend and 4 or 5 guns at a time so for me just to get on the lanes runs over 50 bucks.

I hear that and I've actually stopped taking most of my friends because they would rarely chip in.

I might as well save the money and shoot all the ammo myself... even if I do have to do it all alone!

I'm surpised you can get Win white box .45 for $10 a box considering that the dealer cost about $10.75 (plus freight). Dealer cost on PMC .45 is about $9.25 (plus freight) so their $9.50 price to you is amazing. Please post their phone number because I intend to buy all they have.

Cheaper Than Dirt has about the best price I could find. They have PMC for $9.97 and Winchester USA for $11.97 (plus freight and misc charges). The best I can do at local stores, Wally World included, is around $12 a box, and only if I purchase in bulk. The ranges all charge from $13 to $15 per box. Considering that they are paying around $9.25 per box (plus shipping) the $13.75 price you paid sounds very reasonable.

You think that's bad...

The only nice local range in the Nashville area (that's close to me, there's a really good one in Joelton) requires you to buy their ammo. They will only let you shoot that "Win-Clean" junk.

And boy they charge for it.

Money to join the range/club.
Money to use the range for the day
Money to buy their targets
Money to buy their ammo...

Now do you wonder why I haven't re-newed my membership?

Don't get me wrong, they place is ultra-nice, but just too expensive for my blood

i believe he's refering to the S&B where the range charge him $13.75 while you can get it for $9.50.
Natchesz sells it for $7 something for the CCI Blazer while they sell about $8 for the S&B. I buy all my ammo from natchez, except for that one time deal when i went to a range and they only allow "green/clean" ammo.
 
I looked up the price of S&B on the Natchez Shooting Supply web site. They must buy truckloads of the stuff direct from the manufacturer - that's the only way I see that would allow them to sell it for $8.85 a box, especially considering that the dealer cost from Sports South wholesale distributing is $9.18 plus freight.

Natchez has Win white box on for $10.78 plus freight (dealer wholesale cost is $10.75 plus freight).

The only problem is that freight runs the cost per box back up to around what I pay for ammo locally. The only way to save is to buy by the case. Freight on a case of .45 ACP should average about $8 (UPS Ground rate for a 35lb package).

i bought 500 rds of CCI Blazer 230gr 45acp from natchez, i believe it was some $7 something. after UPS shipping, it comes down to about $10.50-$10.75 per 50rd box. it is still cheaper than local! :D

They have 230 Blazer 45 advertised at $7.75 a box. Pretty good, even when you add in freight. Now if Springfield repair would hurry up and get my gun back to me.... :D
