I just bought a Ruger P-95 today. It's a fun gun! The Ruger is also very easy to carry.

What about a CZ p-07? They come in 9 and 40, and are very accurate right out of the box...... I paid $369 for mine in .40.

I've not found many guns of the DA/SA variety that I trust more than my Ruger P95 (and I also own Beretta, SIG, and Walther DA/SA guns). Its an AMAZING value for what you get.

If you want a striker fired gun in the brand new category about all you can get for that price is the S&W Sigma or the new SD VE. I've fired the Sigma before. Its good (and was reliable), but not really my cup of tea. Never fired the SD but I've heard its a lot better and I'm probably going to end up trying out one of those myself. The Ruger SR9 would be a solid choice too but after FFL transfer would slightly exceed your budget.

On the used front you can look at Glock police trades or other surplus guns. Military/police surplus in general tend to be a great place to look as the guns are usually very well maintained and since they're bought in quantity the prices are often very good.

Where do you find guns for sale/trade that are military/police surplus?

AIM Surplus, Wideners, Robertson Trading Post, J&G Sales, Southern Ohio Gun, Century Arms, Centerfire Systems. You should be able to google all of those. I'm sure I've bought from a few others but those are the ones that spring to mind.

Where did you get it?

I hear so many mixed reviews on this one so I mentally blocked it.

Springfield XD $399.99 +tax at the LGS.

Ruger SR9/40 $389 at the same LGS.

I would have to also give a nod to the Ruger P95. Excellent value, very solidly built, ultra reliable, in my opinion far from ugly, but it will be the buyers perception that rules. I have owned one for years and it has been very impressive with its smooth though heavy double action trigger, its great single action trigger, ambi safety/decocker, ambi mag release, 15 plus one in the chamber. It comes with 2 mags too. I have out-shot Glock, S&W, Berreta and Sig owners at the range with some of them commenting that they were interested in getting one for themselves. I think this gun has always been underrated by those who have no experience with one, which is truly unfortunate. If you can fire one I would advise you to do so...at least hold one in your hand and see if there is a good marriage. You can't go wrong with this handgun especially with the pecuniary limitations you have set on your purchasing of a new pistol. In the end, I wish you good fortune finding a pistol that satisfies your needs, let us know what you choose. Peace.

I would vote P95 or 5906 over sigma, that trigger pull is ridiculous. Big XD fan here so you can guess what I vote...
