So I bought a brand new Colt Defender 9mm and a new Springfield Armory EMP 9mm. Took them out to the range yesterday and here’s a few observations. I also included a brand new Glock 19 9mm in the mix as well.

Through each gun I fired 50 Winchester White Box FMJ & 50 Remington Golden Sabre JHP. Figured that I would see if I had any major problems with either.

I had heard so many horror stories of epic failures in reliability with 3” 1911 designs and honestly was expecting a few hiccups. Surprisingly, with 100 rounds put through each gun, I experienced absolutely no problems or failures and each gun ran flawlessly. I know that 100 rounds isn’t much through each but at least any obvious problems should have become apparent.

I had better groupings with the Colt Defender than I did with the EMP. I am chalking this up to having the Hogue grip on the Defender whereas the EMP has a smooth front strap that causes small amounts of movement during firing. Both guns felt phenomenal in the hand. Racking the slide of the EMP was the smoothest slide I have ever felt.

Sights on each gun were great and still a huge fan of the Novak Designs. Night sights on the EMP really helped when turning out the range lights.

Colt Defender: At 20 yards and two handed slow firing, I achieved a 1.4” grouping with most rounds going through the same hole.

EMP: At 20 yards and two handed slow firing, I achieved a 2.8” grouping. Again, most in the same hole but accidentally had a flier which I really wasn’t happy about.

Just for fun I decided to do the same test with a brand new Glock 19 9mm. As I expected, there were zero problems with the gun. It’s probably just be but I wasn’t near as accurate with the Glock compared to the other two. I shot a 3.8” grouping at 20 yards. Still a great pistol but my hands seem to favor the small 1911 style pistols.

I have to say I am very impressed with both pistols and am relieved that I experienced zero problems with a 3” 9mm 1911 style pistol. Still up in the air as to which one will become a daily carry but you really can’t go wrong with either option.

As for me, I am a pretty happy 3” 9mm 1911 style pistol owner!

I plan on breaking them in over the next few weeks and will update with any issues. Hopefully will continue with smooth sailing.

Great range report and good to hear that you had no problems with any of the three guns. Really liked my New Agent, along with those XS sights, but decided to sell it when I got a Kahr CM9 as my EDC.

So you are a achieving fist sized groups well beyond normal self defense distances. I would say as long as those groups are reasonably close to where you are aiming then you are good to go. Enjoy!

Nice work! Are you really talking yards or feet? I can't see a 2" target at 60 ft, let alone group one.

I have the defender in 9mm and it is my EDC. I have been carrying with Hornady 135mm Critical Duty +P. Every time I take it to the range I run 2 mags of Hornady before switching to WWB.No problems in year since I bought it. Texas voted yea in committee to put to vote on house and senate floor for open carry. I think they have a very good chance to pass and the Governor has already said he would sign the bill if/when it reaches his desk. If that happens I'll step up to CZ75B or Springfield loaded. Fingers are crossed!

Exactly what I was thinking. Very few people can do a sub 1 1/2' group at 25 (or 20) yards. Some can do it at 20 feet, but at my range, very few.
And that is with a 5" duty sized pistol. With a 3"? No way.
