So I bought a brand new Colt Defender 9mm and a new Springfield Armory EMP 9mm. Took them out to the range yesterday and here’s a few observations. I also included a brand new Glock 19 9mm in the mix as well.
Through each gun I fired 50 Winchester White Box FMJ & 50 Remington Golden Sabre JHP. Figured that I would see if I had any major problems with either.
I had heard so many horror stories of epic failures in reliability with 3” 1911 designs and honestly was expecting a few hiccups. Surprisingly, with 100 rounds put through each gun, I experienced absolutely no problems or failures and each gun ran flawlessly. I know that 100 rounds isn’t much through each but at least any obvious problems should have become apparent.
I had better groupings with the Colt Defender than I did with the EMP. I am chalking this up to having the Hogue grip on the Defender whereas the EMP has a smooth front strap that causes small amounts of movement during firing. Both guns felt phenomenal in the hand. Racking the slide of the EMP was the smoothest slide I have ever felt.
Sights on each gun were great and still a huge fan of the Novak Designs. Night sights on the EMP really helped when turning out the range lights.
Colt Defender: At 20 yards and two handed slow firing, I achieved a 1.4” grouping with most rounds going through the same hole.
EMP: At 20 yards and two handed slow firing, I achieved a 2.8” grouping. Again, most in the same hole but accidentally had a flier which I really wasn’t happy about.
Just for fun I decided to do the same test with a brand new Glock 19 9mm. As I expected, there were zero problems with the gun. It’s probably just be but I wasn’t near as accurate with the Glock compared to the other two. I shot a 3.8” grouping at 20 yards. Still a great pistol but my hands seem to favor the small 1911 style pistols.
I have to say I am very impressed with both pistols and am relieved that I experienced zero problems with a 3” 9mm 1911 style pistol. Still up in the air as to which one will become a daily carry but you really can’t go wrong with either option.
As for me, I am a pretty happy 3” 9mm 1911 style pistol owner!
I plan on breaking them in over the next few weeks and will update with any issues. Hopefully will continue with smooth sailing.
