I finally got to the range with my newly-acquired long-barreled M657 yesterday.
There's still a lot of snow here, but the road to the range was open. My son and I still had to lug the guns, ammo and targets from the parking lot to the shooting house because the road to it was still knee deep in snow. My son could run over the top of it, and I slogged through when I couldn't use spots of bare ground near the trees.

At 50 feet I fired six shots from standing, getting a two-inch group. Three shots were touching and a half inch away two more were right together. I dropped one shot to enlarge the group to two inches.

From the bags six shots went into three and three quarter inches. I guess I'll shoot the gun from standing rather than off the bench from now on!

I put two more shots into the snow on the berm. I was hoping for a big splash but just got two three inch holes in the dratted white stuff. The ammo used was Remington 210 grain factory LSW.

The M657 has a great single-action trigger, probably the best I've owned or shot. The eight and three eighths inch barrel hangs very well in standing.

I'd been looking for a long M657 for a couple of years. Now I have one, I'm thinking of using it in early deer season in September. :D

That should make a very viable hunting piece ... hope tho you can maybe reload for it - cos I know the factory stuff is wicked expensive!!:p

Does yours have the unfluted cylinder? Not sure which version you have.. or is this a late model?

I just LURV ....... long tubes!!:)

I reload for the .41, but I got a bunch of Remington factory LSW ammo in an earlier deal. I'm in the process of turning it into once-fired brass.

My gun is a M657, plain no dash. It has a fluted cylinder, black sights front and rear, and a smooth trigger. I had the trigger on my M57 six-inch smoothed off, so was pleased that the 657 came that way. It came with Pachmayr grips so I didn't have to pull the wooden ones and add Pachs.

Greeting's All-

You know, in my way of thinking any real handguner
has got to like the excellent .41 magnum cartridge,
and most revolver's chambered for it! This is
the cartridge that I grew up on, and after years of
practice it turned me into a pretty good handguner.
It's a fact that the .41 magnum shoots flatter over
a longer range than the .44 magnum; thus it makes
for an excellent hunting round. I think most folks on
this forum would be proud to own either a Smith N'
Wesson model 57 or 58; as well as either of the
Ruger's.

I know I miss my Smith 4" model 57! I bought it NIB
complete in mahogany case with all tools, papers,
etc for $185.00; but with the introduction of the old
"Dirty Harry" movie, I traded it off for a nickel model
29, .44 magnum. What a mistake! :uhoh: :( Enjoy~
