Recently purchased a Bloom Automatic Golfball Launcher that fits on the 22mm NATO grenade launcher on my Yugo 59/66. Figured "Hey, why not?"

Went to the range today - was the ONLY one out there, weather was in the teens with wind chill, unbroken snow between the firing line and the targets... pristine.

The Bloom launcher is parkerized, and fits over the NATO launcher, screwing on with three dog-point screws. First time I screwed it on, I didn't tighten it quite enough, and after two shots it made its way down to the retaining clip, lightly scratching the NATO launcher in the process. Not a big deal.

After REALLY tightening it down, I blasted off with Wolf blanks (also purchased from Bloom - can't find them ANYWHERE else) and some refurbished balls I picked up on the cheap at WalMart. No more problems with the launcher.

Well... it was FUN, first and foremost. But the balls were as inaccurate as it gets. They flew left, down, right, up...anywhere. For the hell of it, on the last five shots I raised the sight ladder for the NATO launcher. Turns out, there was some correspondance. If you held the lowest notch even with Bloom launcher, the ball hit (roughly) where the next notch up was pointed.

Unfortunately, I lost six of the nine balls into the woods - these things fly FAR, and richochet wildly when they hit - but none of the three recovered were demolished or anything. All reusable. Due to the erratic flight patterns, it proved impossible to actually hit a target with the ball... but it was fun to try! I'm pretty confident if you stood someone up at 100 yards, and aimed directly at them, they would almost certainly be safe. Not a single shot went straight the whole way.

Good thing the range was empty - these things would be a real menace to other shooters. Imagine: You're concentrating on that last, fifth shot in your near-record-breaking group... and just as you squeeze the trigger, a golf ball whizzes past your target, throwing you just off enough...

Then I shot the SKS with regular Wolf Military Classic hollowpoints - still the cleanest ammo I've encountered, BTW - and settled down to really try for some decent groups at 50 yards. My best two came from one stripper... first five were 1.3", then I realized I'd been canting the rifle slightly, straightened out and the next was about 1.7" ... and close enough to the first five to make a total of just under 3" for the ten.

For generic Wolf ammo, I found that completely acceptable, and was even a little pleased.

Summary: For $40, that Bloom Automatic launcher is a hell of a lot of fun... within its limits. And Wolf Military Classic HP 7.62x39 remains incredibly clean and fairly accurate ammo.

<Wants one that fires lawn darts. Is that so much to ask?

You could always modify the M1A2 rifle grenades that Bloom Automatic also carries ($10 ea).

Those also fly a lot more accurately than the way the golf balls are described. If I mess around with them enough (got to wait until range is empty), I'm pretty sure I could reliably hit a refrigerator at 60m or so. Max range is about 75m with the .223 parade blanks. Would definitely be further with proper rifle-grenade blanks, but no idea where to get those.

Now, a rifle grenade with proper 7.62NATO grenade-launching blanks, and a FAL with the gas shut off... now that would have some loft!

The critical detail in that review:
Went to the range today - was the ONLY one out there, weather was in the teens with wind chill, unbroken snow between the firing line and the targets... pristine.
If you shoot the Bloom in calm weather it's not so bad, but those golf balls are like giant wind-hugging devices that pick up even the slightest breeze.

The ladder would be nice to have; I just have to go by guess on my AR as to how far to elevate the barrel. With practice and no wind, I imagine one could probably hit a target at 100 yards pretty consistently.

Roughly how many yards was the 7.62x39 sending the golf ball, 270win?

what about a sandpaper strip for grip, to spin the balls like airsoft does and get some range and stability?

Wants one that fires lawn darts. Is that so much to ask?

When I was a kid, I made a "crossbow" that fired lawn darts. It used a truck innertube for propulsion. It wasn't very accurate but it sure did penetrate well. Ahh the good ol' days of my misspent youth.

golfball launcher eh?

hmm...wonder if they would freak out if you had one in your bag at Pebble Beach?

Make a rule that you can only use it on Par 4 and above. :)

With just minimal elevation, it was easily making it to 100-125 yards. When elevation reached, say, 45 degrees, I lost two balls which just sailed up and out - probably ended up 200-250 yards, maybe more, given the trajectory. Aimed almost vertical (just for kicks) I had one that went incredibly high (actually lost track of it, it got so small), and then came down at 75 yards or so, and then bounced 20-30 feet up and back to the 100 yard line.

I didn't think about the wind, but you're right. I'll have to try it in calmer weather.

I was reading that if you empty the powder from your shell and pack it full with scraped off matcheads you get a lot of power, for launching things larger than golf balls..

With 5.56 blanks, I was getting just about 200 yards at 35-40 degrees or so. At 15-20 degrees it was impacting somewhere around 100 yards, and then bouncing a ways. The guy who invented it said that an SKS could go out around 400 yards plus, but that he wasn't really sure because he didn't have a proper range that long to shoot it.

The real question is, what would a 7.62x51 blank do?

I absolutely love mine - SKS version...great fun at the range. We found that if you take a large patch and load the golfball like blackpowder gun you can get a lot more distance.

We tried a few as close to vertical as we could (had a covered area that we could run under) and the hang time was unreal - just make sure you have a cover - they came down pretty hard and fast!

If you want to get really geeky, SARCO sells the M16 quadrant-sights that bolt onto the carry handle. I picked one up a few months back for $35, which is far cheaper than anywhere else.

Works pretty well, but it only goes up to 45degrees (max horizontal range), so not so good for smacking gophers in defilade.

I have one that I use with a 16 CAR. I bought some blanks in a 500 round case a while back from polygunbag's website. These blanks are powerful and I guesstimate that I am launching in the 300 yard range at a 35-45 degree angle. I have found out that I can't use soft core golf balls because they explode on the way out of the launcher and chunks of the ball go only about 20-40 yards depending on the size of the chunks.

At our range

Good thing the range was empty - these things would be a real menace to other shooters.
Yup, I'd say so. I think I'd get a bit upset when a tennis ball went ricocheting off my target. Of course after I got over the shock, I'd be falling on the ground laughing.
