During the Christmas break I decided it would be a good idea to finally test and sight in the Century Yugo M70B1 that I purchased about 18 months ago. Yes, I know one should'nt wait that long but other rifles had been occupying my time.

The target was posted at 25 yards. I was using Wolf 123 grain full metal jacket ammunition. This is how the first three shots grouped, at five o'clock in the eight ring with the rear sight set at 100 meters.

After adjusting the sights I was able to print a group in the 1 o'clockish area of the ten ring with the rear sight set at 100 meters. Although this is not the group I was looking for (too far to the right, wind was moving the target) it is a good start.

After this I tested one of the 30 round Tapco magazines the rifle came with. With 20 rounds loaded there were no stoppages of any kind using Wolf 123 grain full metal jacket ammunition.

As has been my experience with some of these rifles the front sight had to be adjusted to the right significantly in order to achieve the proper windage.

All in all I am quite happy with this Kalashnikov.

I was looking for an ak a while back and I eventually found this one. On average how much does this ak go for? Do you think id be better off getting this or trying to convert a saiga rifle?

M70's with the fixed stock are kinda few and far between with a price that reflects same ($800+) for a well built Commie carbine, the underfolders being much more common ($500+).

Converting a Saiga, if you've the tools, time and know-how (easily found on line) and the inclination to do so, should result in a "pride of ownership built in my own garage/basement with my own two hands" sorta thing... and I don't know what that's worth to you dollar-wise.

I purchased this particular rifle for about $550 or so. I have seen them be as high as $1000 which was right after November 4th, 2008 (a highly inflated price if you ask me).

I have no experience with the Saiga. This site seems to be full of folks that have converted them though.

Yeah, I used to shoot AKs long time ago, but they are not known for great accuracy. They do kick like a mule. Did you try to shoot through breeze blocks with them. AK can do that easily.

Those Yugos are about the best of trhe AKMs. I had mine for awhile before a friend showed me the tritium sights!

My bore was awful. Dark, rusty, and you could barely see the rifling. But it shoots int 4MOA, and that is good enough for gummint work at close range.

well if bore is rusty, that means that that was an active service rifle, so most likely conscripts didn't clean it too well and they would shoot lots of blanks through it. 4 MOA is blatantly horrible ;-). I only guess, but I would say that M-16 would happily do 1 - 1.5 MOA at 100y.

You shold possibly give it a thorough rub with some hard metal pull-through brushes and strong solvent.
