Range Time Not So Good with Commander

Try different mags. CM mags with hybrid lips work great for some, but they work horrible for others. Try your WC and Tripp mags, if you have them handy. Tripp mags are supposed to cure feeding problems. You don't loose anything by trying them out. Also, don't get married with a set of mags. Because a mag is new does not mean it will work properly. I bought some Checkmate 8rd hybrid mags which are supposed to be very good mags, they didn't work for me. I currently use Wilson 7&8rd , Power mags, Colt 7rd and Colt 8rd mags with no problems. I also once bought a Colt 7rd mag with hybrid lips that didn't work, returned it to Colt and the replacement worked like a charm. I am not a gunsmith, nor a professional.

I actually have the ETM mag but haven't gotten around to trying it. I have tried the 7 and 8 round Tripp with varying success. Para you're right about the mags. Some pistols will feed any hollow point ammo you throw at it, like my 4506, while others are more picky-same with magazines. I have just convinced myself that the CM mags with the Wolff springs are the ticket but it ain't working out. It's sporadic in feeding and that's what pesters me. I may go through 2-3 mags full and no problem. Next mag loaded will fail in some way or the other and my confidence goes out the window.

I'm gong to give this pistol one more try and if it starts coughing on me again, it's going to be up for sale. I have others that won't do this and I've expended enough ammo and time trying to get the Commander to run right for the past three months. I'm about to quit.

Col, Hate to see you having these problems, but I'm right there with you. I have the Grandaddy to your commander, the Series 80 Mk IV Enhanced from around 1995. I have changed recoil springs 3x 16, 18, 20, settled on the 18 factory by Wolff, Chip McCormick Shooting stars worked pretty good, but less than reliable can never replicate the FTRTB, Seems to be with about 3 rounds left for me. Bought 3 brand new CM Power Mags, same result only more frequent, changed extractor tension became too tight, took tension off where it holds the loaded ball round but falls free by slight wiggling (that was the last advice I got... (not from here mind you...)) Carried this for 15 years for duty! Worked ok for first 50 rounds or so, but when dirty (carbon fouled and dry) began to ftrtb. more than 1 malfunction every 100 rounds, not reliable! It's a Hammer! I'm better with a hammer... I absolutely love my Colt but I'm carrying a Glock because it was $400 to a gunsmith or a Glock. I will never sell the Colt, It was my first duty weapon and will be passed to my son.

Also had a range instructor watch me shoot, he felt I may need to hold a little higher (I have the original "duck bill" beaver tail) and should put on an extended beavertail safety, others recommended combat grips. Cant tell If I limp wrist but I don't lock out my arms in my modified weaver. I'm On the same road you are with my beloved commander, beleive me! Feel Like I've tried it all!

That said,

Tuner has written some stuff about the barrel link. I'm going to check into the $5 wilson combat #2 and see how that goes. I do not trust my hand with a dremel even making knives!!! let alone any where near the same bench as my commander!

I fixed my problem a few days ago...traded the Commander for a 9mm HK USP. Now I can enjoy shooting without wondering when my next jam is going to happen. Enough was enough. I have two S&W 1911's that have their first time to cause a problem yet everyone bashes the external extractors. My 20+ year old 4506 has one of those and it's the only pistol I've ever owned in any caliber by any manufacturer that has never(did I say never?) failed in any way. S&W must be the only ones that got the external extractor right. I've had more luck with those than the internal extractor.
