The mother of a good friend of mine recently had a run in with a man being pursued by police. He didn't assault her personally, but during the chase he ran into her car and her garage, apparently on foot, doing damage to both. She has since become concerned about her safety and wishes to purchase a firearm. She's former Army and used to go shooting with her ex-husband but that was many years ago. She's expressed interest in a .38/.357 revolver (not compact/CCW type). I told her she should try a range that offers rentals and see which ones she likes best.

Can anyone recommend a range that offers a decent rental selection in the Culpepper county area of Virginia? She would probably be willing to drive up to one hour one way to try out a few. A range for regular practice in the area would also be useful. I don't think she'll take it, but if you know of self defense training classes in that area, I'll pass them along as well.

Any information is appreciated.

I don't know exactly where you are in Culpeper, but I live in the Chancelorsville area of Spotsylvania, and I use two ranges, only one of which I know rents guns. That's "The Range" off Rt 1 in Stafford. It's actually on Potomac Creek drive but it's only a block or two off 1. It's an indoor range and they do rent guns. Not a bad place at all. I try to go during the week and it's never very crowded, but I've never been during the evening or on weekends. You can buy ammo there or bring your own. They charge by the half hour.

The other one is Clark Brothers Guns in Opal on Rt 29, going toward Warrenton. Outdoor range, 7 and 15 yard pistol ranges, rifle range and so on. AFAIK they don't rent guns, but if you're looking at a used gun they will let you shoot it. At Clark Brothers the range is free, but you have to buy your ammo, targets and such there. My wife and I have found that it works out about the same price, either way. Again I've never run into a crowd at Clark Brothers on a weekday. Just got back from there actually. My wife and I went through a brick or so of 22's. :D

There is also an Issac Walton League facility off Rt 3, between Chancelorsville and Culpeper, but I can't find a contact to find any information about it. The address on the IWC website is no good.
