On December 14, 2012, 20 innocent children and six adults lost their lives in one of the worst, most tragic shootings to ever occur in the United States. As a parent of three daughters, this was the ultimate nightmare. Like the Virginia Tech and Columbine shootings, this tragedy unfolded in what was once regarded as a safe haven free of crime and violence: a school.

I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment constitutional right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. I own firearms and I have an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association. However, I also recognize that, like with many of our constitutional rights, our Second Amendment rights are not without limits. It is unfortunate that a tragedy of this magnitude is what is needed to prompt action, but we need to have a serious discussion on how to best avoid these kinds of mass shootings in the future. The status quo is not acceptable.

I believe our discussion should cover many issues. We can start by taking action on issues that enjoy widespread support, such as broadening background checks for gun purchases, ensuring all appropriate records are submitted into the background check database, and making improvements to our mental health system so we can provide help to those with dangerous mental illnesses before it is too late. In addition, I have received many comments from across the Commonwealth regarding the White House task force's recommendations to curb gun violence. I am actively reviewing these recommendations and will carefully consider related legislation as it is developed and introduced in the Senate. As I formulate my position, I urge you to continue to express your views.

Kaine is a "Yes" vote for anything and I wouldn't count on Warner if you want the truth.

Tim Johnson should probably be higher. Like 8+. He is not running again (not announced yet, but not a very well kept secret either) and his response letters on this issue indicate that his staff feels a need to "do something" (aka gun control). Johnson hasn't been calling the shots since before the last election, the staff runs things.

On the topic of gun control, Heitkamp does not hesitate when asked if she'll support an assault weapons ban; her answer is a definitive no.

The rating for McCain is probably wrong. McCain is a long time advocate of closing the mythical "gunshow loophole".

Interesting thread. I'm encouraged to see the two gentlemen from Colorado rated so high. It makes me feel that my messages may be a little more influential than I believed, especially due to the "political correctness" of the replies I've recieved so far. It appears they may be a little more in tune with thier constituents than just toeing the party line. I may however change a few words now to let them know that.

Begich should probably be rated lower. His responses to my inquiries have been more supportive of the 2A than Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski's.

Still, doesn't hurt to make sure he is good and aware that he will lose his seat if he doesn't vote to protect the RKBA.

I have been in contact with Kaine and Warner on an ongoing basis. I am well known in the community and have told both the I will mobilize votes and money for their support or defeat, their choice.
Rep Forbes is an A rated Rep.

I received the same message from Warner. Nothing from Kaine. Both Senators are Lapdogs for Obama, Kaine is the greatest offender. I have probably sent them each 50 letters or more for certain bills in the past six weeks. Neither of these guys is going to support the 2nd Amendment. Warner keeps crowing about his "A rating from the NRA" but he clearly hasn't shown any backbone in all of this, he was one of the first ones to roll over like a little (female dog) after Sandy Hook.

I always include the following verbiage to the VA Senators because VA is not a solid blue state and there is a good chance that the next elections could unseat them if the opposition can field a halfway decent candidate:

Make no mistake that there are many people watching these bills in the Virginia Commonwealth. I will be supporting all pro-2nd Amendment candidates in the upcoming election. I will also be ACTIVELY campaigning AGAINST any legislator that is submitting ridiculous anti-gun legislation that restricts my 2nd Amendment Rights that cannot be directly linked to a positive impact on violent crime. Believe it. These campaigning actions include my money, my time and my voice via my friends, acquaintances, social media and my physical presence to oppose you at your campaign events.

Brian Schatz is a co-sponsor of S.150, so I'd mark him as a 10. And Manchin has already been giving the "Nobody needs" speeches, so it doesn't look like he plans to run for reelection in 2016.

I don't see Chuck Schummer or Diane Feinstein on that list. Perhaps the two MOST radical when it comes to additional gun laws, bans, etc.

The list only ranks those Senators who are not A-rated or F-rated by NRA. Schumer and Feinstein are F-rated, so the list assumes they will vote "No"

Good news is there are 40 A-rated Senators. Anybody from the above list joins them and you have enough to filibuster. If we can get 11 out of 26 on the above list to join the A-rated list, then that is a Senate majority.

I agree 100% - We can't count on our Senators from Virginia for anything other than to toe the party line. I have contacted them at least twice per week since this began. I received the same canned response you did from Sen. Warner. I received this from Sen. Kaine tonight:

No one can deny that gun violence is a serious problem in this country today. We owe it to the victims of the growing number of mass shootings to vigorously debate specific and comprehensive proposals that can keep our communities safer. In a bipartisan spirit, I worked with then-Attorney General Bob McDonnell to immediately improve our background check system and issued an executive order ensuring that those adjudicated to be mentally ill and dangerous would be entered into a national database and barred from purchasing weapons. We also changed standards for mental health treatment and increased funding for community health programs while dramatically improving campus security and efforts to assist college students suffering from mental stress.

In January I attended a round-table event in Richmond with Vice President Biden on gun violence, to talk about the lessons learned in Virginia and the need for a comprehensive approach to these problems. As your U.S. Senator, I will work to bring that kind of comprehensive approach that will strengthen the safety of our communities, while protecting our Second Amendment rights. As a gun owner who worked with others to constitutionally guarantee Virginians the right to hunt, I know that you can be a strong supporter of the Second Amendment without tolerating the gun tragedies that are too often a part of our daily lives.

Concerning specific proposals, I am a strong supporter of universal background record checks. This is the only way we can enforce existing laws that prohibit dangerous individuals from purchasing guns. The Second Amendment is NOT ABOUT HUNTING!
Also, the Second Amendment is still NOT ABOUT HUNTING!
Please stop trying to divert us to "reasonable" restrictions that "respect the rights of hunters and sportsmen." The Founders of this nation did not waste ink and time on the Second Amendment to ensure that Americans would always be able to go to deer camp.
Please read the Bill of Rights again, then get back to us when your reading comprehension skills have improved.
