I just joined the NRA. I was holding off on this because I just knew what the result would be - but the potential discounts finally made me cave in...

And I was right: my email inbox and home mailbox are FLOODED with absolute CRAP from the NRA. Book offers, insurance, "calls-to-action" (which are OK), endorsed product offers, special sales at the NRA store, and the list goes on...

What's worst is that with each "unsubscribe request" I send, I find out that there's another list I'm on! I've sent literally FIVE unsubscribe requests and I keep getting at least 1-2 messages every single day.

I respect the NRA and what they do, but their marketing is rather intrusive.

Ok, rant over...

I've been an NRA member for a couple of years now, and I seldom get unsolicited mail from them, electronic or otherwise. I just get occasional email updates about the latest anti-gun laws or whatever, but it's no big deal. Wonder why?

When I became a Life Member it increased 10 fold. I joined the business alliance even more. If I see NRA special offer as a heading I usually delete. The calls to action I read. I'm a sucker I've bought all the books and videos that they've mailed. They make a few nickels every time I do and without them we would all be playing with Airsofts if that!

NRA in bed with congress

I joined the nra over 25 years ago and cancelled my membership when I found out that they don't defend the constitution and they are bed partners with congress, hell look where here head office is.

My husband has been an NRA member for about two years and we have never one time received any "junk" mail from them. There is usually a place in signing up that you can check to say you don't want email from them or unsolicited places. Maybe you still can do that.

they are bed partners with congress
Uh, they have lobbyists. That's kind of how they get influence.
hell look where here head office is.
I suppose you would prefer it in the backwoods of Idaho where they couldn't easily meet with the folks they are trying to influence?

read your constitution

read the constitution then check nra history. if you can't understand the constitution then let me know and I'll explaion it to you

The NRA is doing more for RKBA by compromising at times than taking a "no compromise" approach to 2A. If they did nothing but try and block every piece of gun legislation, we'd probably have nothing left. Congress/laws don't work that way.

And every new bill proposed by anti-gun congressmen can only be defeated if you send the NRA more money. If they spent half the money they spend to solicit money from ther membership on lobbying efforts, we'd all have class 3 weapons in our homes... supplied to us by the government.

IBTL. I LOVE the NRA because Diane Feinstein really HATES them. That's a good enough reason for me. :)

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), said on CBS-TV's 60 Minutes, February 5, 1995, "If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them . . . Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in, I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren't here."

the NRA doesn't send me enough email

or junk mail!

Why do they ignore me?

I worked darn hard to become a life member!

It's not fair!

Gunbabe is correct. I remembered doing this and found the answer:

from the NRA Website FAQ

Q: How can I reduce the amount of mail I receive from the NRA?
A: Simply email us at [email protected] or dial 800-NRA-3888 and request to be placed on the "Do Not Promote" list. This will significantly reduce the amount of mail you receive without affecting important mailings, magazine service, or your membership renewal.

I did this and volume of my NRA unsolicited mail dropped from incredibly huge to virtually none.

Hope this helps.

Bullseye

With each "NRA compromise", we lose more and more of our freedom. I would much rather fight the anti-gunners than become them, as the NRA has done. GOA and JPFO are much better at actually fighting to KEEP your rights instead of letting them be whittled away a little at a time in the name of "compromise". When was the last time the anti's gave up something in these "compromises"? Why is it that the gun owners always LOSE in these "deals"? Take a look at the most recent betrayal - the NRA was INSTRUMENTAL in helping to pass the Carolyn McCarthy sponsored NICS expansion that will add MILLIONS to the "prohibited person's list" (they can't even TOUCH a gun). These people are not criminals, but they will now lose their rights to own a gun.

The legislation you mentioned does not change anybody's gun rights status. Previous federal law already denied gun purchases to anyone who has been adjudicated mentally defective. That has been the case for many years. What the new bill does is make those court adjudications available through NICS. Again, this is not a new restriction on rights but instead is enforcement of an already long-standing restriction.

You may still object to it, but you look better objecting if you object accurately to what really happened.

You might also want to look in to your "millions" number there.

A) Contacting the NRA and asking to be removed from the solicitation list would have taken less time than it took to write the rant about being on the NRA solicitation list.

B) Those who adopt a position of No Comprimise usually end up losing (but they feel good about it because they "did something"). The NRA is one of the most politically savvy organizations on the planet, and one of the most feared on Capital Hill, because they know how to choose their battles and when a small loss can result in a big gain.
