I searched the forum and couldnt find anything specific to this. Has anyone ever re barreled a 1916 back to its original 7mm, and is it just a matter of changing the barrel and having it headspaced?

I think that's it. If it's currently in .308 or 8mm, I believe the case heads are almost identical so no bolt mods needed.

Thanks, what got me started on this kick is last weekend a buddy came over to do some shooting and had an 1895 mauser in 7x57. it was the first time I had ever shot one, what a SWEET rifle/round. I could not believe how accurate that thing was and the recoil was almost nil. I must have one, in the mean time sarco has short ring mauser barrels in 7x57 for 45 bucks. And i happen to have a 1916 in 308.

I rebarreled my Spanish 1916 in 6.5x55 Swedish, great rifle, way more accurate than I can really use with my eyes and iron sights.

My wife has a '93 Spaniard. It came with a shot out barrel so we got one of those surplus military 7X57 large ring barrels and had the shank turned down and rethreaded. It's a great rifle. Not much recoil and very accurate. You can still get those barrels from Sarco or Numrich for less than $40 (I think).
