Re-stain the wood grips on my P7?

Hi. I'm really showing my ignorance here. The wood grips I ordered for my P7 were a little darker than I anticipated. They look okay, but I'm considering trying to lighten them a little. Any reason I can't stain them myself? Anything I should know?

Well, for one thing, staining always makes wood darker, not lighter.

Unless the color is in the surface finish itself, and not in the wood grain, there is no way to stain it "lighter".

You might maybe be able to completely remove the finish and find lighter wood underneath, but it's impossible to say, without knowing what kind of wood it is, and what kind of finish was used.

I've had good luck with sanding and then using Casey's tru-oil to finish grips,
looks good and makes a tough finish.

Umm lol .. I suspect you have a set of grips from Nills . Now being the gentle man that i am if you ship me your crappy old grips i will hand make you a set from the blondest pine 2x4 that the lumberyard has .

Ok all bs off If your not happy with your woods sell them , dont try and change them . Ill suggest such places as park citys if you want hk folk to look at your sale and gun broker if your insecure about what you need as a " reserve " .

If you attempt to bleach or refit or otherwise change high end grips you make them low end grips which are worth about 5 bucks if YOU pay shipping .

Thanks guys. On second glance, these are what they are and it'd be impossible to change them. They're nice grips. If I don't learn to like them, I'll sell them and try again.

If they are Nill grips they are probably made from walnut, and walnut is a dark wood.
