I have an old 8mm x57 Mauser. It's a 98, with peep sights that I like, and a Timney trigger. There is a grind mark across the top of the action, I was told it was where the Nazi proof mark was ground off. (if this is unlikely, and you have other information, please let me know) This would make mounting a scope a bit more difficult, so I plan on sticking with the iron sights.

The gun has some sentimental value to me, so I'm going to hang onto it. But, when I got it, the stock was already cut down for a shorter person, (I was a kid), and now that I'm full size, It's so short it's not comfortable to shoot. I would like to put a 'new' stock on it, so I can put the gun back into service.

I'm not doing this to increase the value of the gun, just make it more usable. I like the idea of wood, and Midway has a Monte Carlo style for about $100. Will that raised cheek piece make it harder to use those iron peep sights? I really do want to stay with a wood stock. Can I do this and stay in the $100 price point? I'm not trying to build a show queen, but I do want it to look decent.

thanks,
PE

first ones bout 37.00 more than what you want to spend, but i have had my eyes on one of these for a long time. i would love to get one, but i have to go back to work first!

if you go down a bit further, theres one with a straigh comb, for your irons, for 99.95$ i think you have to finish sand and stain, but it is also a good looking stock.

hope this helps, and keep me posted, as i think that i am going to be doing the same thing soon, to a mitchells mauser. thanks, brian.

I took a look at that site. I saw a few that were listed for that model, but they either had cheekpads, or thumbholes. I forgot to mention that I don't care for a thumbhole design.

Thanks though!

Of all the rifles to need a new stock the 98 should be the easiest to find. Nobody makes stocks without offering some to fit the 98.

If you don't mind a used one search the parts listing of the Gunbroker auctions. Or check a local gun show. I see 98 sporter stocks laying around all the time.

The problem with most of the new stocks, synthetic and wood, is that they are designed for scope use. The comb is too high for barrel level sights. I had the same problem so I haunted gunshops and gunsmiths for an older take off stock from a rifle that originally had sights. I finally found a stock from a middle 50s J.C.Higgins M50 that only had to be inletted a little to allow the trigger I was using. Cost me $40.00 and works well and is a beautiful piece of wood.

Google Numrichs gun parts. They should have the actual 98 stock. You can also go the Boyds gun stocks. I think they make a replacment stock for the K98.
