There is a guy in my town wanting to sell a like new ReadHead gun safe for $450.00. It says it has a fire rating of 30 mins at 350 degrees. Most i see say at 1200 or 1300 so does this mean it keeps the inside safe to 350 degrees?

I think it is a 21 gun. has dial lock with key.

So what do you guys think is this a good safe for the money or stay away?

chances are the fire rating is for 1350 degrees....might be a typo.
sounds like a good price for what it is.
use the search function....lots of good info from a1abdj, and cb900f
both are safe techs and have given a huge wealth of information to this site.
i'd probably pick it up if someone wanted to sell it to me.

You probably mean "Redhead" right?

A blurb from BassPro:

"RedHead Ranger 11/22 Gun Fire Safe - Gloss Black
$749.88/each
This safe from RedHead will provide you with a lifetime of protection for your cherished firearms. All RedHead safes come standard with U.L. listed burglary protection, lifetime warranty/free replacement guarantee, and a laser cut door. Each safe is built using laser technology and CNC equipment, resulting in more security and fire protection than any other brand. Certified fire protection at 1200?F for 32 minutes. Exceptional value without compromising security and fire protection. Comes standard with electronic lock, and a gold-plated 5-spoke handle. Features: Electronic lock 12-gauge steel 5-arm gold spoke 4 active 1'' bolts 11/22 ivory interior 1 center divider 3 side shelves Weight: 450 lbs. Dimensions: 60'' x 26'' x 20'' Color: Gloss Black

Personally, I think that all that about laser and CNC giving it more security than any other is pure malarkey, and that these are the typical 12 gauge steel unibody jubs that can be split open with an axe.

They best hint in safes, as I can make out, is the weight. More weight= thicker steel in any given size safe, and thicker steel makes for more work to get in. At 450 lbs. (probably shipping weight that includes wooden framed packing material) this is a relative lightweight.

For $450. it's a fairly good deal although you can find deals like it all the time in craig's list. If the guy will deliver and put it where you want it, why not? It's better than nothing.

I looked at safes with dial locks. I prefered the electronic Redhead.

My Redhead 11/22 is fire rated for 1200 deg for 1.5 hrs. Mod#ECSL-0601A.

I purchased it just prior to Christmas for $750. If you take out the Bass Pro CC they give you a 10% discount on 1 item. Total, including tax was $720.

The "rating", and I use that term loosely, if for the interior temperature to reach 350 degrees.

Bass Pro sells a number of Red Head branded safes, and have various grades of safes made by the same manufacturer.

The doors with the rounded edges were built by Granite Security in Denton, TX. Some are 10 gauge, some are 12 gauge. Some have heavy doors, some have light doors.

I would value the safe used between $200 and $500, depending on which safe it is.

Thanks for the replys guys, Yes i meant Redhead. And i ended up up not buying it due to size. it was only a 13CF. And i got an amazing deal on a brand new Centurion made by liberty. weighs 520 pouds, 12g steel, 1250 degree for 30 min rating. I know its not special but i live in a town where there isn't much crime and it will basically stop the smash and grab. Will buy bigger and better when i can afford.

REDHEAD Safe Info

I just bought a RedHead® 12/24 Fire-Resistant Gun Safe that was on sale at Bass Pro for $649.00. ( regular price $1149.00). The door is cut square, and it came with the SecuRAM electronic lock. It is made by Granite Security Products, the same people that make the Winchester safe line. I assume the safe is an import from China, as it was covered by a cardboard box with characteristics of Asian cardboard.

I am not sure about the long term durability of the electronic combination controller and am considering installing a S & G Mechanical Combination Lock when the safe warranty expires.

Has anyone had problems with the SecuRam electronic lock, or modified the safe for a mechanical lock, or had the safe door inner skin removed to expose the boltwork and lock mechanism ?

More Redhead

Good, Good and Good !!

My concern is a lockout due to the electronic lock failing... Perhaps you can you provide some details on installing a mechanical lock, like an S & G combination lock on the Redhead.
It would make sense that the doors are all alike, and a retrofit would be straightforward. Could they have the mounting holes drilled and tapped from the factory ??

Any details would be appreciated.

The majority of the safe locks on the market share the same footprint and mounting holes. In some cases, minor modifications are needed, but in many cases it's pretty straight forward.

As a do it yourself project, changing from a mechanical to electronic lock is pretty straight forward. However, installing a mechanical lock is a little more complicated. Not saying that it's not possible, but there are a lot of little things that if not done properly can result in a lockout down the road.
