All,
I picked up the subject gun a couple weeks ago for my son (14), and we took it out to the range. He was powdering clays in no time ... :)

Then, he wanted to put some rifled slugs through it at the 25 yard range, and shot about a 2 in. group (with the C-lect choke dialed 1 turn further "open" from IC, to full cylinder). He was all smiles, and really wants to hunt deer with the gun in the fall.

I've got no experience shooting slugs through a Mossberg bolt action shotgun, and got some questions for those with experience:

1) The C-lect choke instructions say slugs can be shot at any choke setting ... ... I'm afraid he could shoot the choke off the barrel with a full setting (but, on the other hand, it would seem to improve accuracy) Thoughts?
2) Is there a rear sight avaiable for this gun, or any way to create a rear point of reference?
3) Any other tips/tricks to make this gun more accurate?

Thanks all, and take care,
Chris

It is what it is.

It would be very difficult to put a satisfactory rear sight on a bolt action shotgun.
The split rear receiver ring is open on top for the bolt handle to slide right through right where a rear receiver sight needs to be.

Plus, it would be so high you would need a really tall front sight to make it shoot where it is looking.

Slugs usually shoot best with a more open choke like IC or Mod.

Although it probably will not harm the adjustable choke, why risk it.

I'd say if he is shooting 2" groups at 25 yards, sights or more choke will not make much improvement.
