I'm considering buying an older Mossberg 500AT that has a C-lect choke on it. I was wondering if it was possible to shoot steel shot through it? I'm not sure just how old it is, but know that it was definitely made pre-90's. It has to be able to shoot steel shot. If not, then I wouldn't buy it. Any ideas?:confused::confused:

I don't think any of the old permanently installed collet type adjustable chokes (PolyChoke etc) can handle a lot of steel shot through them. In time the fingers can crack or break even with lead shot. Were I you I'd give Mossberg a call during business hours to make sure before making the purchase.

And it might not perform very well on other than lead shot, either - http://www.chuckhawks.com/poly-chokeII.htm . Note that this is the newer design adjustable choke designed for guns fitted with screw-in choke tubes. http://www.poly-choke.com/choke2.htm

No, Mossberg doesn't recommend using steel shot in them. Or in any of their fixed chokes for that matter (cylinder choke excluded, of course.) If the barrel is original to the gun, it was made well before 1980.

Thanks for your help! I guess I'll have to pass on that gun. Besides, I just got a lead on a Benelli Super Nova...
