Reccomend 9mm ammo

First off, my knowledge of firearms is somewhat limited. My experience is only range time, no military or law enforcement.

Because of this, the ammo i primarily use is cheap remmington 9mm.

i want to buy around 250 rounds of quality FMJ 9mm for any SHTF/self defense potential. I've experimented with other rounds and know why remmi whitebox should be used on the range only!

i dont need the top of the line gold plated diamond tipped type of ammo. Just a good dependable 124 grain FMJ for my g17 and 226.

what do you guys use for personal defense? i have some range time with Federal Hydrashock 124 JHP but cant afford to stock up on these due to price.

9x19mm FMJ is NOT good self-defense ammunition, if for no other reason, that shooting through your assailant and hurting a bystander is generally considered a bad thing.

I've had excellent luck with Winchester White Box 147gr. JHP. It's accurate reliable, and very reasonably priced for real self-defense ammunition.

124gr fmj for practice: Federal American Eagle or PMC Bronze (most bulk stuff on store shelves is 115gr)

economical defense stuff: Winchester WWB Personal Defense 115gr jhp or 147gr jhp; Remington UMC 115gr jhp (both are carried at Walmart);

premium defense stuff: the sky's the limit...try some various stuff & see what your gun groups well with and you feel confident with; when I get some cashflow, I will probably get some Winchester Ranger-T in 124gr +p or 147gr (unless 50 round boxes of Speer Gold Dot becomes available that cost less)

Fiocchi makes an inexpensive 115gr JHP that is both accurate and reliable. I agree with the other posters 9mm FMJ ammo is not a good idea! If it was a .45 and you wanted to use FMJ...but that a WHOLE other topic!

Winchester SXZ (Bass Pro) 115 gr JHP (accurate, cheap), or Fiocchi 147 gr JHP (Cabela's) (quiet, high quality).

Pick up a case (500 or 1000 rounds) of Win white box or Amrican Eagle for practice and buy about 4 or 5 boxes minimum of Speer Gold Dot Hollow points. I'd put about 2 or three boxes of the Speer through to make sure it functions well in your handgun and retain the rest for defense purposes. Use the case qty stuff for practice.

I try and put 1k rounds though any handgun I carry with the defense ammo I choose, but that gets expensive really fast. Do as best as you can afford.

For defense use any 115 to 124 grn , and then shoot them till they lay down and quit doing what made you shoot them in the first place . pick a load that shoots " where the gun looks " thro range testing . IE shop for the load that works with your pistol and your sights . 147s are ruled out simply because as a rule they dont shoot to the sights on most pistols .

FMJ ammo is pretty much just FMJ ammo. You do get some better ignition reliability and more more consistant charges with military grade stuff such as 9mm NATO, but as far as defense goes WWB is as good as any. If you are working within a budget, try to get some cheap WWB hollow points. It's not as good as some of the better stuff on the market, but it is a leap ahead of just using FMJ.

I've had good luck with Winchester White Box 115gr FMJ and Remington UMC 115gr FMJ as far as general practice rounds go. I've found Walley World to have the best prices on ammo (and it has to be good to get me to even think about going there).

That said, I'd break down and spring for the Gold Dots 115gr or 124gr +P. Unfortunatly, you should figure on just buying a 500 round case. 200 to check for relaible functioning, 40 for loading up for home defense duty, the rest gets stashed for SHTF and replacing your load occasionally to keep it fresh.

9mm FMJ is the suck for anything other than range use.

I like 124 gr FMJ sub-sonic for for range and USPSA league. I use reloads to save money. I shoot every week. I'm comfortable with these. The bad guy at the door is going to get what I can give him.
Whatever you decide on---shoot it. Don't have 20 rds in a box for protection and shoot something else.

FMJ is fine for SHTF stuff.

If you get to the point where you've shot through your regular defense rounds, the hollow points, then feel great that you've survived and FMJ should work for you if you've gotten to that point...

I agree with untainted. I buy the 100 round packs of WWB 115gr FMJ and keep about 300-400 rounds in my ammo bin. For SHTF rounds I think the FMJ will work just fine. I wouldn't use it in my carry gun but for stockpile its just fine. If you are dipping into a couple hundred rounds of your ammo then I think overpenetration just may be a concern of the past and things have gotten pretty bad. Likely the 9mm will be for backup use and I'll have my AK or another rifle for defense. I keep about 500 rounds of 7.62x54 and about the same or 7.62x39 and my kids are familiar with how to use and fire an SKS and Mosin. Now I'm just rambling, sorry.

1. Winchester White Box JHP's for everyday pistol carry
2. Winchester White Box FMJ's for first few hundred rounds of backup for your 9mm pistols/9mm cabines
3. Wolf Steel Case 9mm (1000+ rounds) if you still need more than your first 500 rounds of good brass

Also +1 on the wolf fmj sugestion. I have put ~ 1000 rounds of it through my SIGs w/ zero failures.
