So I have 2 questions (for both SBR's and regular receivers):

Does the info that's required to be stamped/engraved/etc... on a receiver have to be visible with, for example, the furniture installed?

Does the info that's required to be stamped/engraved/etc... on a receiver have to be in the same place as originally manufactured?

As regards to " By engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing", I've found no legal definition that specifically states "not hidden".

As regards to "The serial number must be placed in a manner not susceptible of being readily obliterated, altered, or removed", the word "hidden" is absent (from the SBR requirements).

Keep in mind that this is a *legal* question, not a "what would you do" one.

EDIT: Oh, and my questions are based purely on cosmetics.

ATF regulation §478.92 requires the serial number to be placed "conspicuously". It says nothing about being "visible".
There are many SxS and O/U shotguns that require you to open the action to view the serial number on the receiver (often on the water table, the part of the receiver covered by the barrels when the action is closed).

Engraving the serial number on a part that requires disassembly to view would likely not be considered conspicuous.

If you are the maker of an NFA firearm you can engrave your information on the frame, receiver or barrel.

If it's "conspicuous", it is by definition "not hidden". If no legal definition is used then the term is defined as it is used in common usage.

Well, the word "hidden" is not in CFR 478 or 479.........so why use it?:scrutiny:

I'm not sure why this is a question at all. You seem to have found the applicable regulation.

If this is a serious legal question, and if it's important to you to get a serious and correct answer because you intend to rely on it, then you need to ask your own lawyer instead of asking a bunch of strangers in cyberspace.
