Rechambering question

I recently acquired a remington Model 7 chambered in 260 rem. I was wondering how could I rechamber/barrel it to .308 because they are roughly the same length for the action and whatnot.

Would I need to have it rebarreled and chambered? Or would I need to buy a new barrel and chambering for it period?

It would need a new barrel definitely (.260 is a lot smaller than .308/.311), unless you are going to have it re-bored and re-rifled.... And you would get it chambered when the new barrel goes on.

Ok, wheres a good source to buy .308 barrels, it needs to be stainless steel 20 inch medium thickness of a barrel everything else standard. This will be going on the M7 Remington.

Shilen, E.R. Shaw, Douglas all make barrels.... but if you are not a gunsmith yourself, I would recommend going to one and letting him do the work... it might cost more, but you can generally be assured quality work, so long as the guy graduated from one of the reputable gunsmithing schools.

The easiest,most economical way to go would be to just trade in your .260 for a Model 7 in .308. You could also buy a .308 version for about the same money as the conversion will cost.

There are often takeoff barrels available. Place a wanted ad, look in Numrich and/or the auctions.

Many of the builders of "tactical" weaponry rebarrel in .308 for a more accurate barrel.

Regardless, re-barreling one & setting the headspace isn't a DIY project unless you are prepared to spend some big bucks.
You will need a barrel vice, action wrench, chamber reamers, and headspace gages.

Also possibly a lathe, if you get a take-off barrel and have to set it back a thread to set the headspace on your action.
